What is your reaction to the story "The Shawl"? What did you like or dislike? How well do you think it captured the situation the family was in?

Describe your experience in our ENGL 1000 class. How has it been different from other English classes you've taken? What areas (if any) did you benefit from? What areas do you feel you did not benefit from? Most importantly; do you feel as though you can now "Appreciate Literature"?

I think that this English class is completely different from any other English class that I’ve ever taken. I think that it has taught me a lot about understand different works. I like that it has required reading everyday because it makes me read where I probably wouldn’t have done so if we didn’t have quizzes and... more

My experience in your English 1000 class has been a blast. The way you made the atmosphere in the classroom at ten in the morning made me want to get up and come. If you weren’t such a real teacher and actually cared about your students I would have hated class. I probably would have told you what a horrible teacher... more

I really enjoyed English 1000 class. It really enhanced my outlook on certain things. It was wonderful to dig into the mind of various writers and poets who try so perfectly to hide their feelings and life behind poems and stories. They want to be explored, but they make you come to them and not vice versa. I don't... more

In this years English class I have had many ups and downs. I have thoroughly enjoyed the class. There is not that much work involved which I like. The class is always open for discussion as well which I like. I have enjoyed the reading passages because they have mainly been short. My favorite story in the class till... more

I have enjoyed the experience I have had in our English 1000 class. I love the mood of the class and that we are encouraged to discuss not just the stories that we read for class, but also to discuss current events that may be happening in our lives. In every course that I have taken with Professor Bates, I feel like... more

My experience in English 1000 has been very good so far. I feel like the more we discuss the stories and the poems the more I feel like I can appreciate and understand the assigned readings. My general experience in this class is that I read the assigned reading and I feel like I get a grasp of what the author is... more

Of the poems assigned to me I liked “stopping by the woods on a Snowy Evening” and “The Red Wheelbarrow”. I really like the imagery of a snowy evening and how such observation leaves people baffled. It tells us how there’s too much one has to achieve and experience before the end of their life or journey and all this... more

What is your reaction to the poems assigned for Monday? Which did you like? Dislike? Why? Are there any poems you've seen in the book you;d like for us to review as a class? (I know that's a stretch...)

My reaction to the poems assigned for Monday is, I am very confused. I really had a hard time understanding what the poets were trying to say in there poems. I’m not saying that I’m that great at understanding poetry but these poems just don’t make any sense to me. The first poem I read was “Because I Could Not Stop... more

Out of the three poems we had to read for Monday I did not really understand any of them very well until I read them multiple times. However I did not understand “The Red Wheelbarrow” no matter how many times I read it. This poem was only eight lines and a little more than a dozen words however after the second stanza ... more

My reaction to the poems that were assigned for Monday was, “wow, I really don’t understand this poetry as much as I thought I would”. Although I didn’t really understand any of the three poems, I did like them. I like Emily Dickinson as well as Robert Frost, I think that their work is lovely and it flows very well. I ... more

What song did you choose for your favorite to identify with? Why did you choose it? What does it say? How does it accomplish its intended message (happy, sad, angry etc)?

For my favorite song I picked “Breakdown” by j.cole. It’s a fairly new song and I don’t think it has made it to the radio yet. I chose it because a lot of music I can relate but with this song I can relate to every verse and not only a chorus or a single set of couple lines. I connect to it on multiply levels,... more

I chose the song “A Place in This World” by Taylor Swift as my favorite song to identify with. I chose it because I feel as though it pretty much describes me and my life, word for word. I also love the melody because it’s not too fast and not too slow and it picks up at the chorus so you can really feel how she’s... more

I choose Cranberries-Bosnia as my favorite song. I really like the message behind this song. It talks about the Bosnian War and how it was a complete waste of time and money. People fight over useless things and don't see the people who get affected the most because of such political disorders. On top of that no one... more

The song I chose as my favorite to identify with was the “I Hate College” remix by Sam Adams. I chose this song because it perfectly portrays by view of college life. I used to like the song “I Love College” by Asher Roth better but after being here, Sam Adams version incorporates more of my view on the topic. “I Hate ... more

The song I choose to identify with is All I Want by A Day To Remember. This song is about picking yourself up from the lowest point in your life, and keeping your hopes up so that you can always stay strong. Basically some of the lyrics are “ All I want is a place to call my own, to mend the hearts of everyone who... more

I chose the song “Fix you” by Coldplay because I felt like I connected with it most. Not just because of the lyrics, but the music lets my mind feel better almost with its harmony. This song I have seen performed at a winter guard competition by the best winter guard in my opinion: First Flight. If you have never seen ... more
