Cool-looking indie SF film that came out in April this year and won some Sundance awards. Trailer looks interesting -- like MOON, it's the sort of smaller-scale film that can afford to take risks and actually have interesting concepts (the kind that utterly blow away film critics who haven't read any real SF in their... more

Hi all, Just re-reading Storm From the Shadows and came across something. While Isabel Bardasano and Albrecht Detweiler are discussing the effects of the Webster assasignation and the attempt on Queen Berry, she mentions that it is possible that Zilwicki and Cachet visited Honor at Trevor's Star. Unless it is just a... more

I managed to watch the lift-off of the Ares I-X test vehicle on the NASA channel on-line. Very impressive. It was odd (and a bit alarming) to watch the dummy upper stage go tumbling off out of control after separating from the booster, but I guess everything went okay. Strange looking vehicle with the upper stage so... more

Hi Everyone! I'm one of the Triumverate that runs the Aegy's site. Aegy's was created over ten years ago by a nice lady named Melissa. It attracted a batch of fanatical HH fans and was one of the most active fan sites around for quite a while. Melissa has since gone on to other things and she willed the site to me and ... more

One of the few genuine SF films of recent times (MOON being another). Graphic, raw, intense, often bizarre, totally believable. It's reminiscent of "Children of Men", with the understated near-documentary filming style and unglamourous actors drawing you into the story. Just the idea of setting events in (and above)... more

Paul this one is for you. I'm proud to announce that my home town of Baltimore played host to a tremendous game of football, that's football as the world understands the term and which we benighted yanks refer to as soccer, rather then the football as Americans refer to it and the rest of the world couldn't care less. ... more

I'm pleased and proud to announce that Great Britain has overtaken the United States in the Great Satan stakes. How did this upset happen? It's probably the BBC's fault. They will insist on reporting things that actually happen, but it has to be admitted that President Obama dropped the ball on behalf of the USA due... more

Times like this I remember why I liked reading Weber's stuff so much. A new book came to my attention via a cover-art discussion: http://www.silverleafbooks.com/Books-WhenTheSkyFell.htm Looks like a typical mil-SF, space opera type novel. The author's got a background in history and seems to have a decent grasp of... more

Anyone had the time or opportunity to read Storm from the Shadows yet?

The first of the Miles Vorkosigan books has been adapted to a comic-book format, albeit in French. There are several preview pages available here: http://www.lekiosque.fr/Lanfeust-Magazine-numero-121-Vorkosigan-en-BD-online-l236557.aspx starting around page 3. Interesting look with lots of baroque aristocratic... more

I saw this topic over at Baen's Bar and thought it was interesting. Who is the biggest loser in the Honorverse so far. My first choice is the Silisean Confederacy. Just imagine growing up in a nation where you are automatically nicknamed as a Sillie. You are a Sillie doctor or a Sillie soldier maybe a Sillie diplomat. ... more

As of the end of At All Costs it looks bad for the Star Kingdom of Manticore. But is it? Apollo represents a substantial increase in the technical advantage of the RMN. Effectively allowing the RMN to engage any enemy from way beyond their ability to return fire. So perhaps Manticore doesn’t need as many ships of the... more

note, this thread is not related in any form to anything about a band who apparently chose this the same name as this thread for their band name. When the Mesan Alignment's guilt is finally proven this year or next year, and considering that Manticore's offer of peace is in the form of allowing the RH a chance to... more

Anyone heard about this guy? The reviews on Amazon seem good, but that's notoriously iffy...here's a more conventional review. http://www.crucialtaunt.com/pop/lore/lore15.html -J

Saw it with my family as a birthday present on Saturday. I enjoyed it, but not as much as I might have. Even allowing for the 'alternate history' aspects, there are plot holes big enough to fly a starship through. As a writer, I put a lot of effort into making sure that there are few, if any, holes in the plots of the ... more

There's never enough good SF on television. This series has turned out to be much, much better than might have been expected...provided it's not cancelled as a reward for that. There's a short video summary of the first season at this page, courtesy of FOX, which makes a decent intro (the 'Season One Recap' video... more

Okay, not maybe the best place to post this but I know it'll get a response here so here it goes. two items actually. ~ITEM ONE~ I'm writing Transformers Fan Fiction. You can see the first 14 chapters of my first book at www.cybertronchronicles.com. I'm nearly 150K words into the second book in a five book series on... more

We all know that the HH books aren't just fight scenes and exploding spaceships -- right? -- but if anyone does make a film or TV series, those are going to be key things to get right. If the comments on this YouTube clip are authentic, this short stunt-fighting video was put together by professional kickboxer Briget... more

First, I am not a fan of BG. I've only seen two or three episodes plus the very first and this last one. But while I enjoyed those episodes I saw, I was pretty disappointed with the final half hour of the series finale. Why? Well, three main reasons: 1) It's been done to death. I can think of at least a dozen, books,... more
