KneesSandra, Thu Nov 19 7:31am
Does anybody know exactly what happens to the knee during an anterior THR? My knee is still bothering me after six weeks. Actually, it was the first and virtually the only thing I complained about during my three days in the hospital. It was very swollen and we iced it and medicated mainly for that pain. By two weeks, ... more

Limp Resolution?Sandra, Thu Nov 19 7:23am
If a limp is going to resolve by itself, how long should it take? I have had it for some years; the first I recall was about five years ago, before I even knew I had hip issues, a friend's husband asked her "Why is Sandy limping?" I was unaware of it. My husband keeps telling me to quit limping and walk normally, and... more

EXCERSIZE AFTER THRBRONSON, Wed Nov 18 4:46am
How long after surgery should I expect before I can resume light cardio on the AirDyne stationary bike as well as some sit ups on an incline board and crunches. I'm certain that there will be doctor's orders but I would like to get a feel from my fellow hipsters. I'd like to hear some exsamples and histories. I am... more

Yogini SciaticaSheriALS, Sun Nov 15 10:53am
You mentioned that you are having trouble with sciatica and had an MRI...No results on that yet? I also am dealing with sciatica since a year pre-op. I had an MRI last year which showed some bad disks at L4 L5. The sciatica improved over time but never went totally away. In my research I have been reading about... more

Six Months, Four DaysSarah, Thu Nov 12 7:01pm
...but who's counting? Where are my APril and May buddies? So, I was doing GREAT. I even had an evening when I went out with friends, after a day of doing jury duty, then my two-hour workout, considerable walking, and when we went out, I didn't even care how far we had to walk (remember, I'm in NYC, where we don't... more

3rd opinionNala, Thu Nov 12 12:43pm
Ok. Just got my 3rd opinion yesterday. This dr does not want me to have hip replacement. He said that I'm too young (32) and that if I had replacement, my hips will not last more than 15 years, which means that I would most likely have 1-2 more replacements in my lifetime. He said that with every additional surgery,... more

NEW MATTRESS?Sandra, Wed Nov 11 9:33am
For some time I have had trouble sleeping on the expensive latex mattress I bought three years ago (too soft, very hot), but my DH talked me into waiting until after surgery to get a new one, with the idea that my preference might change. Well, I'm five weeks out today, and dying to get a new mattress. What do you... more

Cipro reactionMaryG, Wed Nov 11 8:09am
Since late September I've been struggling with severe tendon inflammation in my "good" hip caused by taking 10 days of Cipro antibiotic, and am under an orthopedic doctor's care. Most is clearing up, but one spot remains, even after steroid treatment. On the most painful and inflamed day, when I needed help to get out ... more

Stair climber?Sybil from Ontario, Tue Nov 10 12:48pm
Has anybody used a stair climber machine? I'm not thinking of buying one or even using one regularly. Its use is to do with a fundraiser for ovarian cancer and would require 1776 steps at a local gym. The steps don't have to all be done at the same time. I have THRs from 1998 and 2003. I broke my right femur in May... more

Anterior versis [posteriorJellybean, Mon Nov 9 3:44pm
For my first surgery I got a noted surgeon in the area. Heard about another one for my second surgery three years later and he did the anterior method. Sometimes there is no surgeon available to do the anterior in your area.

Different types of SurgeryNala, Mon Nov 9 2:25pm
Can anyone share with me your experence in chosing the between the anterior or posterior approach? My thought would be that if the anterior is suppose to be so much less evassive, that everyone would do the anterior approach right?

expectations after THRdonna, Sun Nov 8 7:16am
I am a 45 y/o woman who has bilateral hip dysplasia. (So far no problems on the left side). I had surgery 6/09 for labral tear debridement and microfracture on the right side because my femoral head had punched a hole through the cartilage and onto the acetabulum. I followed all post op instructions/restrictions to... more

Hi Everyone, I don't know if you remember me, but I joined in on this discussion group back in April before my first THR (May 4). I was terrified and a lot of you were so kind and really helped me get through the surgery. My recovery was fantastic and I was back at the gym 12 wks later weight training. I just had my... more

33 and needing hip replacementJ, Sat Nov 7 8:28am
Hello I am 33 needing a hip replacement. I had an osteotomy when I was 27 and it did not work. I have pain in my hip, however, most of my pain is in my knee. Sleeping has become very difficult as evertime I move, I have sharp pains in my knee. Has anyone else experienced severe knee pain before having a hip... more

too young and scaredNala, Fri Nov 6 11:16am
I'm 32 and facing hip replacement on my right hip. As I've gotten older, my pain has increased. Met with a surgeon and he said I'm 3 cm shorter on my right than left side. I've been fortunate that although I'm in pain, I'm able to do active things. I'm running in a half marathon in 1 week and just did a dualathelon.... more

WELCOME TO TOTALLYHIP

Hi - I am new to the site. I am really excited that a site like this exists because it's hard to talk about it with family and friends when they don't fully understand. Here is my story: I was born with congenital hip dysplasia. At age 16 I had an osteotomy on my left hip. I then had 4 more surgeries to take out... more

Revision+Infection=DepressionVicki/Spudtown, ID, Tue Nov 3 12:55pm
Hi Everyone, well the 10/28 left revision went well.....until I get ready to be discharged. The blood test that morning "had a colony growing" in a petrie dish! In the grand scheme of things, this infection is more easily treatable than some I could've contacted, but the effort of healing that my body is going through ... more
