Unless the cop's being so extreme as to threaten your very life or the life of a family member, you cannot respond to them with violence. Try to get a badge number or at least car number, and if possible, names of any witnesses, if there are any.

They have all the weapons and credibility with the courts on their side, as well as fanatical esprit de corps. They'll always back each other up.
