Subject Trusted by the victim?

I refer to this article in Psychology Today:

"Gaslighting is a tactic in which a person or entity, in order to gain more power, makes a victim question their reality. It works much better than you may think. Anyone is susceptible to gaslighting, and it is a common technique of abusers, dictators, narcissists, and cult leaders."

A perpetrator and a victim are necessary, but I've never seen the requirement that the victim must TRUST the perpetrator...?

Although that was of course the case in the movie of the same name which gave rise to the term...
