The airline may have chosen to piss off an adult passenger to avoid pissing off a family....

Stranding an adult gets far less media coverage than stranding a "child" (which is how the media would portray it).

They described the passenger as a "teen"... It COULD hvae been that the teen was an unaccompanied MINOR... which I think there are some pretty specific rules about not bumping such a passenger.
