Some consider him a "war hero" … others do not. It is an individual choice and opinion.

Facts and opinions must be kept separate.

For me, a war hero is someone who altered the course of war in favor of his/her nation by significantly saving mankind and/or property. McCain did neither. He chose to suffer until the war was over and all captives were released. Perhaps it would have been better to accept the terms of release, and then retaliate in a major way.

I'm not sure exactly how he was treated in captivity, but he never let us forget what he said he went through, while the others who were held captive went on about their lives without making a big deal out of it. Much more significant than McCain's self-proclaimed heroism, 58,220 military personnel lost their lives in that ill-fated war … they gave all and did not live to tell their families and loved ones about it. A lot of loved ones and families suffered. McCain hurt one family, created another, and went on to live in the lap of luxury.
