The question was asked why he would do this... As you suggest, he MIGHT just be doing it because he likes that stuff and figures everyone else does as well.

He also MIGHT be doing it because these are college age kids and figures they would like it more than other things.

If I were president, I would have gone another way. Given these are college students and not other world leaders, I would shy away from something very fancy, but I would probably go with something cooked in the white house kitchens rather than anything ordered in.

If I were a GUEST, I would find it kind of neat to eat even a simple meal, heck meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans, off of white house dishes cooked in the white house kitchen...

IMO if I were serving college students, many of whom are away from home for the school year, I would be looking to do some home cooking type menu, like Mamma used to make type food.

But again, as you said, it's hard to guess the motivations of the POTUS on this particular issue. I doubt he was INTENTIONALLY trying to upset the players or their coaches. And I honestly don't know if they WERE in fact bothered by it or not.
