Noted that there is some sort of automatic synchronization between the default user permissions and the selected new user permissions. Thus, after changing the default permissions followed by the selected new user permissions, the default ones flipped to something other than what I asked for.

There is no "going forward" button to get off this screen with an associated "all changes made" message. Instead, one must use the browser BACK button, with no assurance that changes were saved.

I note you fixed the anonymous poster problem that I had complained about. I hope you provide a similar option for advertising-supported boards, too. However, I can see where you might be forced to limit the block to the default anonymous handle. I think administrators of those other boards would appreciate having that limited option. Banned posters have sometimes come in from left field as "anonymous".
