A medication that might help

Hi, Pearl,
My schnauzer, Annie, is being treated for chronic pancreatitis and kidney failure, but she does not have diabetes. But she has had a poor appetite.

The vets at the vet school have prescribed her the drug mirtazapine as an appetite stimulant. Its primary use is as an antidepressant for humans, but it seems to be accepted as an appetite stimulant for dogs. She gets just a tiny fragment--1/4 of a small tablet per day.

You might ask your vet if it would be appropriate for your girl.

I read the suggestion for tripe--I've heard that from other people, too. I bought a can but never tried it because we were recommended some prescription diets.
