FO N J M 'Nate' BARRY 3 & 501 Sqds

Yesterday I was visiting Wensleydale, Yorkshire and was able to say a prayer by the grave of Nate BARRY in the loveley quite surroundings of Finghall Church, near Bedale.

Born in Keer Weder, Fransch Hoek, South Africa, grandson of a Bishop, he was at Pembroke College Cambridge and joined the University Squadron and the RAFVR.
After traing was appointed ADC to AVM de Crespigny but on his rfequest was posted to No 3 Squadron.
He joined 501 in September 40 at Kenley and was shot donw on october 7th by Bf 110 over Wrotham and although he baled out he was found dead.

Why then is he buried so far away ?

It was because his sister Erica had married the Headmaster of Aysgarth Prep, School and Finghall was their local church.

When I first tried to locate the church some years ago I had a problem as there was no sign of any church in the village but on calling at the Post Office I was told it was located some distance away at the bottom of the valley and near the Estate named Akebar [ now a Caravan Site ]

The Post lady asked why and when I gave the reason she told me her father had taken Nate's body from the nearby Station to the Church by Farm Horse and cart.

Then we found that Aysgarth School had educated a number of pupils who became BOB Pilots and it turned out that the daughter of Nate's siter and her husband was still living in Bedale. We have met a few times since.

The churchyard is very well kept by the owner of the Caravan Park but yesterday it was necessary for me to pull out some of the grass.

There is one other War Grave at Finghall as from WW1 is for a member of the Royal Flying Corp, son of the Vicar of that time.
