Mark Andrew
PO John Gilbert PIPPET
Wed Oct 27, 2010 11:06pm

On Tuesday next The Lord Mayor of Hull will present the Society Memorial Plaque at St Mary's College

The following background to John Gilbert P has been researched and I found a link to Wing Commd Michael H Constable-Maxwell DSO DFC of 56 Sqd [ 1917-2000 ]

PO Pippet was Killed in Action on 23rd February 1941 which means he was stationed at Rochford. No details yet found on how he was killed.

It has turned out to be a most interesting family to research as we knew very little about the background but that they were RCs as John attended Marist.

By a strange co-incidence Pilot Officer John Gilbert PIPPET [who was born in Hull in 1919] had the same as 2nd Lt. J G PIPPET MM from Lincolnshire who was killed in action in the first world war.

1901 census
Hamilton House Market Rasen, Lincolnshire
Margaret Maud Pippet abt 1866 Cook, Ireland Head widow
Cyril Vellenworth Pippet abt 1891 Everingham, Yorkshire, England Son
John Gilbert Pippet abt 1896 Everingham, Yorkshire, England Son

Research shows that the father was Benedict PIPPET born in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, abt 1848 and the 2 children born 1881 and 1888 at Everingham from his first marriage.

The family were Catholics and Benedict and his father were both Agents to Catholic Landed Families.
Everingham Park used to have the Chapel of St. Mary the Virgin and St. Everilda, an impressive Italianate-style Roman Catholic chapel

Benedict was the Agent to Lord Herries [ Maxwell Constable family ] at Everingham Park Yorkshire and by a co-incidence a grandson of Lord Herries, Wing Comd Michael H Constable-Maxwell DSO DFC 1917-2000 was a Battle of Britain Pilot in 56 Squadron

John Gilberts parents were Charles Joseph and Marie Adelaide
Charles Joseph was born in Everingham and sent to a Catholic Boys Boarding School at Catterick Yorkshire

1911 census in Hull

Our PO John Gilbert PIPPET was born later in 1920 and educated at Marist College, Hull which was later amalgamated into St Mary's College

Also found was a Brother Sgt Anthony B Pippet RAFVR 740910 listed as a member of the Hull City Mess at Newland House.
At one time I thought that this was the entry for PO John G but then the older brothers birth was recorded 1918 in Hull
I wonder if John Larder or anyone knows what became of Sgt A B ?
