On This Day Sgt Herbert Ernest BLACK

Nearly missed this today but Sgt Black was shot down when he was with 46 Squadron at Stapleford Tawney, wounded and badly burnt. He was taken to Ashford Hospital and died on November 9th with his wife at his bedside.

29.10.40 Whilst on patrol with No. 257 Squadron in the vicinity of MAIDSTONE a number of Me 109ís were sighted flying at 26,000 ft. and 5,000 ft. above the Squadron.
Five Me 109ís attacked the Squadron, the remainder forming a defensive circle, and in the ensuing dog fight one Me 109 was destroyed by F/LT RABAGLIATI, and a probable was obtained by P/O REID. SGT BLACK was badly wounded in the leg and received facial burns, his Hurricane was completely destroyed when it crashed near ASHFORD

Gwen Black wrote the Forward in "The Battle of Britain Then & Now ". Very courageous of her at the time.

      I read once that through his burnt lips all he kept saying to his wife was "they followed me down Gwen" over and over again referring to his Squadron who he had seen circling him to keep him safe.
