If your grandfather listed Pottsville as his birthplace, it probably just means that he was baptized at St. Patrick's church in Pottsville. I would recommend requesting a lookup for his Baptism around the year he says he was born or the year the census would indicate he was born, that way you may get the surname of his mother. If all of the children are listed as being born in PA, you should also have them check for the marriage of his parents, they may have met and married on this side of the Atlantic. If John, your original immigrant was a coal miner in the 1870 census more than likely they lived in one of the patches in the Southern part of the county when they first arrived, check for their location in 1860, 1850 through the census. I would probably try to find as many records of the sibling Baptisms as possible, the Godparents at Baptism usually indicate a familial relationship and you just might find a clue to his home county in IReland, through those relationships.
