What to do, what to do...
Tue Oct 17, 2006 1:54pm

Stella twitched her skirts irritably, glancing around at the bustling Novices and Accepted around her. Every so often an Aes Sedai would walk by, and Stella would once again practice her curtsy – awkward after misuse. Her mother had insisted she learn how to curtsy, in case nobles came into the inn.

As if a noble would ever come into a kitchen, she thought, still slightly miffed at the long ago argument. But her mother had one, as she always did. I hate losing, she thought. But, she added wryly as she curtsied to another passing Aes Sedai, I think I’ll keep on losing for a while, no matter what I hate.

Stella was lost, trying to find somewhere quiet to think that didn’t have people looming over her, and she was losing her patience. She felt so….new…standing amongst the activity with no idea what to do. She couldn’t bring herself to ask anyone, although some of them looked at her in a “new meat” kind of way. She knew she stood out, but she didn’t want to admit that she couldn’t find what she was looking for.

This is what you get for never traveling, she told herself, annoyed. I couldn’t remember directions if I had them tattooed onto my face.

Stella’s grey eyes scanned the courtyard, and wondered whether it would be worth it to just go back to her room. More like a closet, she thought. She hadn’t expected the Novices to live in luxury, but….well, from what she had seen of Aes Sedai, she would never had guessed they had once slept in the tiny Novice rooms. Just like you had hoped you could wear what you wished – not hoped, expected! You’re more than those ‘empty-headed Novices’ you scorn than you think.

Stella gave an exasperated sigh, causing some passing Novices to look at her strangely, but she ignored them. She had been looking for a small, quiet place to think about what had happened to her, and what she would do, and she was only becoming more irritated and angry than she had been in her Novice room, listening to the chatter of her fellow Novices around her.

“Can I help you?” a voice asked, and Stella turned to find she was looking at an Accepted – Saldaean, Stella thought, noticing her eyes – and almost as tall as Stella was herself. “I am Kipacha al’Shain, Accepted,” she added, and Stella suddenly remembered what she had been told. Giving the woman a curtsy, Stella couldn’t help but admire the colored hems on her dress. Not even a few days in Novice white and already appreciating any color you can find, Stella thought wryly, imagining what her mother would say.

“Um, well, I was…..I was just looking for someplace to sit. Accepted Kipacha,” Stella said, aggravated at asking for help and yet relieved someone had offered at the same time. “I haven’t any lessons yet, and I was…going to find someplace to…sit.” That didn’t sound very Novice-ish, so Stella added, “Until I have to help in the kitchen in a few hours. If you…wouldn’t mind…showing me someplace? Accepted Kipacha.”
