Jield Pilaweth, Head Gaidin
The Feast of Lights
Mon Dec 18, 2006 4:11am

The Feast of Lights; a two day celebration starting on the last and shortest day of the year. Every window in Tar Valon is lit up for the Feast of Lights to create a glorious imagine, and in many localities the second day of Feast of Lights is called First Day or Fisrtday and is considered a particular time to give charitably.

The year was coming to an end, and with it another year was going to begin.

Looking out one of the windows in his quarters, Jield’s eyes glazed over the colourful details of the gardens that had been prepared for the two days of festivities before them. Instead, he found himself reflecting upon the year that had passed and everything that had been accomplished within it.

Like any year, it was made up of a myriad of achievements and disappointments – his own and those of his trainees. Overall it had been a good year – somewhat slower than was usual, but a good year nonetheless. There were events and people that marked the year, Jayani Sedai for example, and made Jield question where the upcoming year would take him. But for now, he was happy to relax a little bit and enjoy the festivities that lay ahead as much as was possible for him. The Feast of Lights was glorious when celebrated in Tar Valon; Jield knew for a fact that his own family was ready to light up every window in their inn to stick to the long held Tar Valon tradition. Jield had found that there was nothing quite like walking the streets of Tar Valon in the glow of lights on the night before Firstday. Sometimes he’d be lucky enough to find a lover to walk with; yes,, that sounded like a good idea.

Unfortunately, it was not to be for the Head Gaidin this time; he had tasks and duties that he was bound to by his responsibilities towards the White Tower. Indeed, he had to make sure that there wasn’t a lack of common sense at the celebrations. He knew the Aes Sedai would not appreciate one of his trainees impregnating a novice – or vice versa for that matter. Not that he would be blamed, of course, but Jield didn’t want things to get that far along. That was a possible problem with two full days of festivities; many were so inclined to drink and let it go straight to their heads.

Jield trusted his trainees to a limited amount of alcohol and the Aes Sedai trusted the novice less, from what he knew. There were no limits on the Gaidin and Aes Sedai, and he’d heard some interesting stories – or rumours, really – of their drunken antics; he was glad he hadn’t seen an anonymous Aes Sedai kissing skulls or some other such ridiculous absurdity.

Sinking back into reality, Jield blinked rapidly and the world came into focus once more. The sun was now fully risen which mean that the festival would be starting soon,. Already people were out in the gardens, clumping together to begin their socializing, and so Jield knew that it was time for him to begin to make his way down towards the Entrance Hall where the Amyrlin would officially start the festival. Reaching across to one of the pegs mounted on his wall, Jield took hold of his fancloth and swung it around his shoulders, purposefully averting his eyes from it as he did so. After eight years as a Gaidin – Light that made him nearing his thirty-fourth nameday! – Jield was still not used to the nature of the fancloth, and if he looked at it too closely, or too often, then his stomach would often heave in protest.

With that, he was all ready for the two days ahead of him; he was quite looking forward to it actually. He had arranged with Jaya – it was bizarre to think of her as ‘Jayani Sedai’ – to meet up mid-morning and she would accompany him on his duties. He was sure that they would have interesting and insightful conversations, they always seemed to, and no doubt they would discuss possible candidates for her Warder choice, a topic that the Head Gaidin thought about more and more often. He trusted that they would find someone eventually, but it frustrated him that of the Gaidin he had shown her, none were good enough. Jaya seemed good at finding their faults, but Jield did not overly mind; it was refreshing and eye-opening if nothing else.

He shut and locked the door to his quarters behind him – he wanted to take no chance that a drunken prank could happen in there tonight – before quickly striding down the corridors to the Entrance Hall. He had a feeling that he and Jaya would have a late breakfast of an early lunch at some inn in Tar Valon as they watched the streets for any trainees or novices thinking they could get away with misdeeds outside the White Tower, so he didn’t get himself any breakfast. He would, he realized, have to make sure that they didn’t eat at his family’s inn.

The Entrance Hall was already filled with bustling, excited, people by the time Jield got there; many people were obviously looking forward to the Feast of Lights. He looked across to the centre of the room where Evelyn Sedai, the seven-striped sole around her shoulders, was climbing up onto a raised alias, Demetri Sedai at her side, the green stole of the Keeper draped over her.

Well, Jield thought, so begins another festival and another year!
