HOGGARDS of Barton le Willows

Hi Michael,
You said "I am in search of the father of Henry Hoggard who married Hannah Humble on Nov 8th 1897 in Leeds who according to the marriage certificate would be a John Hoggard."

If you have a subscription to Ancestry or Findmypast then it should be simple to trace the family back to 1841 at least. You should also be able to get BMD certificates using Freebmd and buying them from the GRO at £9.25 a go I mention this in case you are tempted to get them through Ancestry which costs twice as much.

Having said that it was actually quite hard to track Henry - I think he was born 5 or 6 years earlier than it would seem from the 1901 & 191 census records, and his father was very young, probably no married.

Details below. Bryan
Looking in Ancestry for any Probate for Henry HOGGARD I have not found one for the elder Henry but this seems to be his son
1965 HOGGARD Henry of 2 Lascelles Lane Old Malton Yorkshire died 21 April 1964 at Malton Hospital Yorkshire Probate York 13 September to Thomas Henry HUDSON and Donald Ernest HOGGARTH and Gordon Henry HOGGARD Farmers, £2,583.

You said that Henry HOGGARD married Hannah HUMBLE in Leeds. On Ancestry it has marriages in the West Riding and the certificate says Henry the groom age 28 was a Drayman and his father was John HOGGARD a Labourer.

Hannah do Wife Mar 29 YKS Pickering
Lucy HOGGARD Daur Unm 2 YKS Leeds

Finding Henry in earlier censuses was a bit tricky as Ancestry has his name indexed as HAGGARD and his age seems about 5 years older than said in the 1901 and 1901 censuses and at his marriage.

So can we show that the age for Henry HOGGARD in 1901, 1911 and his marriage was about 6 years too young?

This is the probate for his widow which may help
1961 HOGGARD Hannah of 297 Eastgate Pickering YKS widow died 12 Nov 1960 at St. Marys Hospital Dean Road Scarborough Probate Wakefield 7 February to George Arthur HOGGARD foremen labourer. Effects £135 14s 11d.
Freebmd has the death
Deaths Dec 1960
HOGGARD Hannah 81 Scarboro' 1b 898
Which gives her dob as c. 1879 which fits.

There are two deaths for Henry which have the right sort of age.
Deaths Jun 1933
Hoggard Henry 62 York 9d 18

Deaths Jun 1942
Hoggard Henry 77 Scarbro' 9d 387

If the 1942 death is of the right Henry then it confirms he was born about 1865 rather than 1870.

If we can locate the father of Tom Winter HOGGARD then he is the brother of Henry HOGGARD and that may locate the father of Henry.

James do son 9 YKS Barton le Willows
Mary do Daur 6 YKS do
Robt do Grandson 2 YKS do
(Note this is the same grandparents as had the Grandson Henry in 1871)

So did this John HOGGARD born about 1804 in Huttons Ambo have a son called John?

Charlotte do Daur 2 YKS do

So there we have John the father of Robert and Henry who must have had Robert when he was only 15 years old. Odd but possible.

So next thing to look for is John HOGGARD born about 1843 in Barton le Willows.
