Hello,

I am trying to learn more about George Hogarth, ESQ, who resided in Herring Bay, Anne Arundel, Maryland. This is what I know:

- Per 1800 census, his birth years may have been anywhere from 1756 - 1774 (Birth Location unknown)

- Per newspaper accounts, he lived in Herring Bay (near Friendship) on his 972 acre property, purchased from Samuel Lloyd Chew, from at least 1799 until his death in 1822.

- Per his will dated 1821, he manumitted (freed) his three children born in slavery (George, Henry and John) their mother Margaret Mitchell, her other children along with all his remaining slaves. I am the descendent of one of his children.

- Two of his children, Henry and John, along with their mother moved to Haiti in the 1820's. His third son, George, moved to New York and was a prominent member of the AME Church and was very involved in the founding of the Weeksville Community in Brooklyn. All three of his three sons were educated and were prominent businessmen.

- George, the father, seemed to be very wealthy. He had a great deal of land and he was able to bequeath a large sum of money for the time ($1,000) to his friend.

I am having difficulty learning more about George (the father). I do not know if he was born in the US or if he was an immigrant. I do know that he died in 1822. Any information you can provide to help me identify more about George would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

- Audrey
