George, Esq (MD)

Hello Frederick,

Thank you so much for writing! Unfortunately, I don't think that we are speaking about the same George. I found our George's death notice listed in a Maryland newspaper and his will went to probate, in Maryland, December 1822. There is no mention of Berwick.

You have provided me with a clue though. Would you share some more information about the title "Esquire?'

I am new to this and did not realize that it was an honorific because of bloodline. I thought it was a professional designation that indicated that he was an attorney or had studied the law (even though the bar exam had not been established yet.)

Maryland George had listed ESQ behind his name in a few advertisements that he had posted in the local newspapers. Would there be any records anywhere that listed anyone who was entitled to that designation? I wonder if we could find him that way?

Thank you for your response and your help!
