Symbian may be most used in the smartphone market, but how many Symbian users go grabbing apps off their equivalent to the App Store?
I would suggest Android as a starting point because it's an open platform; anyone can develop for it, whereas with iOS (for iPhone and iPad) you need to have Apple's development tools, which I believe only exist on Macs at present - so you will need to own a Mac (or have access to one).
Releasing as an Android app first would at least get the product "out there" to a fairly significant audience - you could maybe also appeal for an iOS app developer to work with you on porting it to iPhone/iPad.
