Ashfairs grey eyes floated across the Oval Lecture hall. His tall lean frame leaned against a marble pillar he seemed to be half asleep. Through his eyelashes he watched, other Novices walked in chatting, a few servants were scurrying around. He hadn’t arrived first but had been early. Since Medaea’s raising things had been a bit quit, so he would have to find another way to entertain himself. This lesson sounded half interesting. Ashfair, being a Borderlander, had no idea what Altara was like. He didn’t even know what the capital was.

After a while an Aes Sedai walked in and took a seat at the centre desk. A brown shawl marked her as a Brown Sister. This was not the one who would be teaching the lesson, the note had been signed by a Blue. Ashfair crossed his arms and straitened his back. This time he openly look around for someone he knew. His eyes fell on a young man called Calto who had arrived at about the same time as Ashfair. Calto, Ashfair had discover, was not to bright when it came to real life and so was an easy target for jokes and the sort. Ashfair’s lips curled up in his usual smile and a gleam appeared in his grey eyes. His mind was still thinking when a voice cut through the murmur and announced the lesson had started and that they were to state their names.

Relevant information? Ashfair tried to think of something interesting to say but when he was up he just said: ‘Novice Ashfair. Borderlander so I have no idea what Altara is like.’

Just as Ashfairs attention returned to Calto the Aes Sedai opened a Gatway. Ashfair’s attention returned to the lesson for this was interesting. The wave of heat that washed over him reminded him of the Blight, though it missed the typical sent of decay. The Novices walked through in single file and Ashfair made sure he was close to Calto now. The ox like Novice kept him out of sight and seemed to even absorb some of the heat before it reached Ashfair. They ended up on a racetrack. His mother had always kept a close eye on Ashfair, making sure he never got anywhere close to a place where he could gamble. Even when he joined the army his brothers had kept him away from places like that. They probably foresaw the chaos he could do to a place like that.

It got even better when the Aes Sedai told them they were to bet on one of the two horses in the race. That was until he remembered he had no money on him. Though he still though it was unfair they would be unable to bet.

Then Ashfair let his expert eye match up the horses. His time with the cavalry had given him some advantage over the rest he guessed. Then again, both horses looked about equal. In the end he chose the one called Faris.
