On her return from Altara she had meandered by the lesson boards on the off-chance that she would find yet another lesson to occupy her time in the near-future with, and to her surprise there actually was one. Do they give us no free time at all? she wondered to herself as she carefully read and re-read the note tacked up on the board’s surface; but of course, she could hardly expect novice life to be a tenure of relaxation. Accepted Aranisia had told her that first day that it would be difficult. Lilli wasn’t chagrined, nor was she riled by the knowledge that yet another lesson would do nothing for her state of fatigue; Light, but it was only the second day! She had no excuse to complain.

Mouthing the words to herself—first Bell after Mid in the Southern Gardens on the morrow—she turned and headed towards her recently issued room in the novice wells. She only lost her way twice. In entering the small, white-washed cubicle, she quickly washed up and fell into bed, asleep within seconds of her frazzled auburn curls touching the surface of her pillow.

The following morning the air was still a frigid grey when she awoke, and tumbling out of bed and gasping when the chill of the floor touched her bare feet, she quickly made up her covers. In the relative darkness of pre-dawn she splashed quantities of gelid water onto her face from the water-basin in the corner—she was certain particles of ice floated on its surface—, and after toweling herself dry she stripped herself of her slept-in shift, which was no easy feat considering the article of clothing stretched uncomfortably taut around her generous midriff, and opened the door of her closet to peer within the confines of its wooden walls.

There was not much choice as to what type of apparel she would wear, of course; all the dresses hanging were identical and white, buy contrary to most novices’ attitude towards the matter, the sight only pleased her. Light, she belonged somewhere! Donning the white, woolen dress with just about the same level of difficulty as she had had with the shift, she whirled around and reached for the comb lying across her small dresser. Though she was by no means a girl to put a mirror to frequent use, how she wished she had one now! Somehow, the resplendent halls of the White Tower made her feel self-conscious, something she had never cared so much about in the past.

Of course, fat people must always feel degraded to some extent or another, but she had never really cared before. Now, the whisperings of her fellow novices in the hallways or in the dining room….slightly put her off guard. She all but worshipped the White Tower, and if she did not feel accepted, here…

But it didn’t matter what she felt. Lilli smiled to herself in the meager light even as she tried to tug the comb through her masses of red hair. It didn’t matter, as long as they didn’t send her away. Her smile faded at that, sadness replacing her mood. Her mentor had mentioned that as well, and Lilli knew all too well that she, if anyone, was most susceptible in being sent away. How would she succeed here, at the incredible White Tower, if so many better than her, failed? She took a deep, shuddering breath as she lay down the comb and turned to face her doorway. She would try until she could try no more.

The morning was spent with another novice, the one who had entered her room yesterday to inform her that a lesson on Altaran culture was being held, showing her around the grounds, the way to the Library, and other places Accepted Aranisia had not covered on her initial tour. Lilli was genuinely impressed, even though her guide’s aloofness and constant sneering should have dampened her mood to an extent; the girl must simply hold something against her, she decided, and though it pained her to struggle with the wondering of what exactly she had done to incur the disliking, she could do nothing for it. But the Library was immense!

When the time finally came for the lesson in the Southern Gardens, Lilli made her farewell with the girl and headed out towards the designated place. The blueness of her gaze delighted at the beautiful sights, from the serenity of the pond that reflected a scene of the clouds floating lazily across the skies, to the loveliness of the rose garden that took eminence to their immediate left. How pretty! She curtsied to the Accepted who was obviously the instructor of the lesson, and when it came to her turn to introduce herself, she said in her customary bashful manner and soft voice, “I’m Lilli Bloom, Accepted, from Whitebridge, Andor.”
