“Off with her head!”

All the other novices opted for the prettier roses, the bright yellow ones or the peach-tinted ones tipped with lambent pink, and as they scrambled with their stools towards their chosen bush—all save the select two who had, by Lilli’s understanding, gotten in some trouble with the Accepted—, she waited, watching, and then when she was the remaining member of the class, she patiently took her stool in her hands and walked over to the cluster of remaining bushes. Which were, inevitably, ones of the far less pretty roses, the ones not picked by the others—though in her opinion, there was no such thing as an ugly rose. Or even plain rose, for that matter. She sat before a small bush dotted with beige-colored and tightly-wound buds and thought to herself, But anyway, nothing here can compare to the rose the male Accepted gave me. She turned up her palm at that, perceiving the crimson bloom in her hold that had been so efficient at rendering her face the same color—but there couldn’t be any gesture as sweet! Fresh heat permeated her cheeks, if it had ever left in the first place.

She stole a shy glance at the Accepted called Alain, who was at present helping one of the white-garbed boys struggle with a weave. She dropped her eyes, her blush deepening, clutching the rose bloom to her chest. Oh, she would ask Accepted Medaea for a Keeping! She would set the rose bloom on the shelf next to the white apple blossom her mentor, Accepted Aranisia, had given her the first day during the breadth of her embracing lesson, where she would regard it daily. They all give me flowers. How fortunate am I!

Though it was more likely that the novices had been laughing at her when she had been proffered the bloom, the fat girl with the funny name who colored profusely when the Accepted’s attention had once turned on her, along with the fact that it was most definitely likely that Accepted Alain had been sallying with her as well,—such a thought never crossed her innocent mind. Oh no. Or if she suspected it, she possessed far too sweet a disposition that she was able to overlook any negatives and only consider the apparent goodness of it all. Stroking the velvet surface of a crimson petal, Lilli smiled tremulously.

But the task at hand demanded her focus, now. After many an attempt, she was able to feel saidar trickle through her. Light, this blessed, pure, warmth… She reveled in the simple ecstasy of it for a few minutes, as all novices must when only having been taught how to embrace the One Power a few days prior. For that matter, she found that she couldn’t hang on to the True Source for more than minutes at a time. It will get better, she told herself with a resolve, and then attempted to divvy up the Elements for her task.

With shaky control, her opalescent strands all but flailing and vibrating violently in her grasp, she was able to set down a semblance of a grid of Water and Spirit, though when she tried to plunge this into the surface of the soil the grid snapped and broke apart. It hurt, doing that, and she let out a gasp as something stung her across the bridge of her nose. Raising her plump hand to her face, she rubbed her skin, startled, and it was a little while after that she could get herself to attempt channeling again. This time she did with excruciating care, directing her flows with painful precision and setting down the strands with knife-edge accuracy. She did everything with a crawling speed, and by the time her first grid, the lower one, was set into the earth and scrunched up around the roots, the other novices had completed their second and several were even marveling at their finished outcome.

Not once glancing wide, Lilli focused entirely on the rosebush before her. The second grid consisted of Earth and Spirit this time, and because the tricky Element of Earth was involved, this was marginally harder, taking more time and more tries. It was painstaking, the effort with which she tried to weave, and considering this was one of her first few attempts at weaving anything in the first place, it was a difficulty indeed, for her. She had to request aid from Accepted Medaea when after the sixth try, her second net crumbled up and all but blew up on her. She was in near tears when her trembling upraised hand finally hailed down the Accepted in her passing.

Accepted Medaea was patient—at least, she appeared to be so—as she helped her in a step-by-step process of the weave, guiding her even as she gently directed Lilli’s flows when they strayed wide of the right direction. It seems so easy when she does it! Soon enough her double grids converged, in a sense, and the added effect allowed the plant’s roots to unfurl and absorb more moisture—at least, she assumed it to be so, considering she was not a mole and could not see beneath the earth’s surface; pity! She watched, her eyes shining (even as sweat from her exertion dampened her brow and temples), as the rosebush seemed to preen itself somehow, and under her rapturous gaze straightened itself out. As time passed, the small beige buds shifted and the petals slowly parted into full bloom.

They are pretty as any…!

Soon it was time for the class to assemble once more. “Accepted Medaea…,” she asked shyly before she joined the others, “Do you think you can weave a Keeping around this one…?” And she held out the rose bloom whose color was a bright shade of vermillion. It matched her cheeks.
