A white rose
Thu May 11, 2006 2:30am (XFF:

Schyler stood as the Accepted ordered. How was she to know to which Aes Sedai she would run had she not? Shyler didn’t bother to reply however as she just turned to face the small pond and without paying any attention to the Accept nor to theother novices who appeared. Braiding her hair still Schyler continued to hum about the Great Battle of Manetheren under her breath. She might have been a gleeman’s daughter but that didn’t that she was here to entertain others! Schyler frowned and stared moodily at the pond for a few moments. She loved her family dearly but sometimes she just wished so desperately that her father had had a job that wouldn’t have caused other children in the streets of Cairhien to laugh at Schyler.

Swinging herself from her toes to her heels and then back again Schyler didn’t feel very bothered about standing. It allowed her to stretch herself and besides the hard stools looked terribly uncomfortable. Or maybe that was just her wishful thinking. After all grapes you couldn’t get were always sour. Yet sometimes the grapes you did manage to get were sour too so Schyler would just have to take the best of this. It wasn’t as if standing was strange to her and she would not appear weak before this snappy girl giving the class no matter how much it took out of her.

Schyler snorted as she glanced around. Sure, the small piece of haven here in the garden was beautiful. But you could only tolerate perfection that long. Perfection, similarity got boring and old, it lacked the sense of life real crooked trees that looked like old men with rough fingers had. Or young willow-saplings that reminded you of young maidens in dance when the wind swung them. Schyler kept her tongue behind her teeth however as some other Novice spoke before she had the chance to comment. And it was a good thing that she had kept her tongue as the girl started explaining. The One Power used at gardening. It felt like cheating to Schyler. Using the One Power would help create straight trees but at the same time it would rob honest farmers and gardeners out of their work. Schyler shook her head stubbornly not liking this at all as she brushed back some shorter tendrils of curled hair that had already escaped her braid. Schyler’s hair was much to thick and much to wild to ever stay in a proper hair-due for long anyway so Schyler just took it all in a stride as she walked to the farthest rose-bush.

Use the Power to make the plant bloom. Schyler felt a chill run down her back at the thought. She hated it. Hated using the one power, hated having to fight with it to make it leave her body again. She didn’t want it. She enjoyed it when the Power flowed into her. It made you feel alive and light as if you were able to jump and fly into the heavens. But then again dancing barefoot on a field while it was pouring could cheer Schyler up too. She liked the nature in it’s pure form and using magic to manipulate real living plants with the One Power made her feel bad. It was as if she was hurting the plants the same way she always hurt after the Power flowed out of her body and Schyler realized she had given into it’s temptations once again.

“I’m sorry, darling,” Schyler whispered to the rosebush touching one of it’s leaves with her finger, “I’m truly sorry.” The petals of the rose were curled tightly together as Schyler crouched despite having been ordered to stand up. The Accepted could come and pull her to her feet again if she so wished. The bloom was level with Schyler’s eyes as she sighed putting the petals gently with her fingers. She tired to imagine what it must be like to be a plant. Did flowers have any worries? Did they feel the water running up their stem? Did they enjoy the sensations as much as Schyler enjoyed eating a slice of bread after a long day? Schyler held the bloom between her palms embracing the One Power (she refused to call it Saidar, as that would make it so much more personal and therefore even more terrifying) and watched the bloom shift.

Schyler wasn’t completely sure how the process went. She couldn’t really even understand her own thoughts and emotions at that moment as she just watched the petals of the rose turning and twisting as they opened slowly letting her peek into the center of the purely and innocently while bloom. White rose. A symbol of innocence. Schyler moved her palms stroking the outside of the petals some more as if to urge the flower to carry on until suddenly pricking herself. The sudden sensation of it pulled Schyler out of her reverie or whatever fantasyland she had landed in. She had given in again hadn’t she? Given in and allowed the One Power inside her to take over her.

Schyler dropped the rose-bloom that had opened only half-way and jumped backwards and up with a half-swallowed sob. Turning around Schyler blinked furiously trying to rid herself of the tears. Gathering herself for a few moments Schyler returned to her previous position standing besides the small pond refusing to look back at the rose-bush. She wouldn’t not transform and torture the rose anymore with the One Power. It was almost violating the rose’s right to live. Schyler’s shoulder shook once but she just folded her arms tightly around her waist and stared into the pond while desperately holding back tears that were gathering in her throat.
