All her time in the Tower, Jocelyn had resented the fact that she was being taught by women who had been in the Tower years less than she had; women who had been channeling for under half the time she had and were yet somehow deemed ready to teach her. Jocelyn tried hard to forget it, but it infuriated her that even after ten years she was still a novice when she had known enough about the Power to be an Accepted her first day in the White Tower. She was too strong for the weaves they taught novices, yet she was for some reason considered to weak to be an Accepted. What was Madeline Sedai looking for? What was that quality that saw a girl like Accepted Medaea raised and not Jocelyn? She didn't understand why she wasn't good enough, and she hated it. There were a few tricks of the Power that she could teach these Accepted from what she knew. Some of them weren't very pleasant tricks either. Yet, she was too good of a novice to do so; sure she was becoming known for pitting her will against that of an Accepted once in a while, but she knew when to back down.

"Each of you take your stool and spread out." Accepted Medaea instructed once she had finished explaining the purpose and origins of the next weave as well as demonstrating it. "Get comfortable and choose a patch of herbs to work on. When the weave is done right, it will allow the air under your dome to heat up and the Water threads will allow moisture to com in and stick around a while until it naturally filters out. Alain and I will come around and check your work and if you need any help, just let us know." Smoothing out her skirts, Jocelyn rose slowly with the other novices and watched as the group somewhat reluctantly began to move toward the patches of well ordered herbs.

Apparently seeing reluctance, Accepted Alain called to the group, "And don't worry, there's no way to hurt the plants if you mess up!" This made Jocelyn smile wryly, knowing full well that too much moisture had the potential to kill a plant. The Tower had a well tended crop though, so one novice's mistake was unlikely to cause too much trouble; unlikely to was not impossible though. Still, the comment seemed to spur on some of the other novices as they headed for plants of their own and settled down by the herbs. Jocelyn headed for a smaller patch of lavender, renowned for its many properties, and set her stool down next to it. Sitting as comfortably as she could on the stool, Jocelyn opened herself to the flow of saidar and began to pick out the strands of Air and Water she would need. Really, she would rather be kneeling in the dirt and using a weave of Earth and Fire, but neither of those were options available to her. The first would dirty her skirts and wouldn't be appreciated by the Aes Sedai and Accepted. The second simply didn't apply. Still, it would have been nice. Sometimes, she wished she were still given as much opportunity to channel her strengths as she once had been. Now it seemed that she channeled nothing but Air and Water day in and day out.

Air was a slightly easier element to work with than Water and Jocelyn drew it out first. With this she wove the grid work dome as Accepted Medaea had shown them with relative ease. After all, she wasn't new to working the Power; not after sixteen years of doing so. Six years she was trained as a weapon, another ten she was trained in peace; she knew how to use saidar properly and she did it well. The working of Air formed with only a minor slip and she was able to set it and move on to the part which used Water, her weakest element. Still, it wouldn't be too much more difficult. The weave itself was fairly small, and Jocelyn knew that overall she was fairly strong so they balanced out with her weakest element. Asked to weave anything too large though, and she would begin to falter. Jocelyn would admit that she knew her own limits when it came to saidar and that after working with it so long she ought to. With the Power, there was nothing to be gained by pushing to far beyond one's limits except a high risk of death. There were Aes Sedai who had done it, pushed beyond their limits, and increased their ability, but the risk was simply too high for such a thing to be done but in the most dire of circumstances.

Water came to her guidance with the ever present grain of difficulty, the tiny pebble in the raging river. Luckily, the flows of Water were smaller in this weave; delicate webbing following the pattern set by the part of the weave that was Air. It soon occurred to Jocelyn, as the Water fought her a little more to break free of where she placed it, that although the flows were small they covered a large area. This negated the fact that the actual threads themselves did not have to be so large. When she finished the weave, it wasn't quite the same as the Accepted's. Jocelyn honestly envied how easily most women worked Air and Water, she really did. She also envied that those same women, like Accepted Medaea, had been raised in a shorter time than she had worn the white. Light, but she was turning into the eternal novice: a replacement for the now Arwyn Sedai. The eternal Accepted had been raised, and what was the Tower if there wasn't someone stuck at the same rank for half their life.

Looking again at her finished weave, Jocelyn sighed. She couldn't see any difference in the plants now that her glimmering netting encircled them, but maybe she wasn't supposed to. When Accepted Medaea came by and didn't make any comment to the effect of the weave being wrong, Jocelyn assumed it was correct and relaxed to wait for the class to be gathered and for lesson to continue.
