Me the Cultivator

The class walked several paces until it had reached a portioned off area of the gardens the female Accepted named the ‘herb gardens’, and Lilli like the others was tacit in her musings as she let her pale gaze run past the rows of neatly divided squares. Accepted Medaea prompted to commence in her lecture and demonstration, and her attention was rapt as she absorbed in all that was taking place. When the Accepted stood up, brushed her skirts, and faced them once more, Lilli peered around the woman to see if the rosemary in its tiny tract boasted any notable difference, but it didn’t. Not really. Perhaps the narrow leaves were a bit straighter and the shoots greener, not to mention the sweet scent more pungent, but there was hardly a way to tell for sure. Lilli recalled how the Accepted had informed that the weave allowed the plant to experience a fitter growth, and she nodded. What she couldn’t see right now would affect the plant in the future.

“And don’t worry, there’s no way to hurt the plants if you mess up!”

Lilli smiled affably at the joke, might have even summoned up a giggle—unearthly, coming from her—, if she hadn’t noticed Accepted Medaea’s look and decided that now was a good time to slink away and start on her task. As she walked between the squares of dirt, she was aware of another girl ahead of her, one who gave no notice of her, obviously, but was one Lilli noted all the same. She was lovely, and had a kind face, unlike some of these other novices here; what had she named herself in the beginning—Jocelyn?

As they had carried their stools with them, Lilli like the rest of her classmates was able to set hers down and hunker down atop of it, her generous bottom covering its round wooden surface as she sat opposite a plot of marshwhite. She recognized it from the run of its oblong leaves and tiny white flowers; as a child she had never harbored a liking to it, as all children wouldn’t, considering marshwhite had a sharp, biting taste that remained bitter on your tongue for hours afterward. For that matter, she hardly liked it even now, though she had finally reached the age when she would dole out measures of medicine for herself. She reached out a fleshy finger to prod at a cluster of minute white flowers, and then frowned when she noticed a stalk of hensfoot, a weed, nestled within a quantity of herb.

She groped near the base of its stalk and pulled it out, discarding it on the path promptly afterwards. She then closed her eyes and attempted to embrace saidar once again. What magnitude to which the process drained her energy! She all but swayed in her seat with fatigue; never had she channeled so much in a day. Several minutes later the One Power came to her, rushing through her with its infinite sweetness, and Lilli channeled, most utterly grateful that Air was one of her strongest Elements. She created the ‘dome’ as Accepted Medaea had shown them, though it took her more than double the time. Triple. She placed each strand with utmost care, marveling time and time again how the weaving resembled something that might be sewn on a loom. Each strand dependent on another.

When that was done and she was certain it would not collapse on her in a heap—it did, several times, ruffling the plant but like the Accepted Alain had guaranteed, causing it no visible harm—she divided her flows to channel Water. This was a difficult process, and sweat beaded out on her forehead before she could finally get it done. Water, thankfully, was one of her stronger Elements as well, and she was able to channel strands of the translucent Power and interweave it between the net of Air; though that in itself was a greater challenge than everything combined. She bit her lip as she missed a loop again and again, and then finally with excruciating effort the thing was done. She watched, amazed, perspiration casting a thin sheen on her face, as the effects of the weave played out. She could feel the moisture circulating and then slowly filtering out.

Smiling, though for what reason she could not fathom—she supposed she was simply exulted that she had experienced such success thus far, something she could not have allotted to—, Lilli turned in her seat and awaited the Accepted to come around and approve her progress.
