Part 1: The Cause

When Allael walked into the room, Tira's jaw nearly dropped from surprise. She got control of her emotions quickly, schooling her face once more to serenity, but her mind was whirling. Light! What is she doing here? She thought. Does Soradrelle know? He'd never mentioned his sister had any intention of becoming a novice. Though from the look on the woman's face it didn’t seem like she was all that happy to be here. She also seemed as surprised by Tira's shawl as she was by Allael's presence. She'd only been an Accepted when Allael and Sora had ridden into the city on that fateful day, and it was just days later that she'd had her testing. No wonder Allael looked surprised. Tira made a mental note to make sure she and Soradrelle spent some time together, even if she had to have him summoned under the excuse of some fake assignment or penance.

Allael took her seat without so much as a curtsy toward her, which rapidly brought Tira to the conclusion that something was not right. It was abruptly made clear when Allael finally spoke. "My name is Allael al'Cantar, and I'm not interested in any ajahs, or being in the tower for that matter. I don't know anything about the blue ajah, and I don't really care one whit about it. So you can just pretend I'm not here, and I'll pretend you're not talking, okay Tira?"

If looks could kill, the one Tira now felt upon her face at being so addressed would likely have Allael laid out on the floor in short order. As it was, she could tell by the other woman's satisfied smirk that she assumed her relation to Soradrelle, and Tira's friendship with him, would protect her from any sort of retaliation. The other novices were on pins and needles, watching and waiting to see what Tira would do. They knew she was newly raised-a raising never went by without tons of gossip between both Accepted and Novice-and how Tira reacted now would cement her reputation with novices for years to come.

Squaring her shoulders she approached the other woman and leaned forward, raising her voice that the entire room could hear her speak. "When you address me child, you will address me as Tira Sedai. And I expect to see you curtsy when you enter a room containing an Aes Sedai." Allael's face took on a sullen and stubborn light, but Tira gave her no time to respond. "For your insolence you will receive extra kitchen duty, and you will come to my rooms each evening after you finish in the kitchen for private lessons on the blue ajah, as well as manners. Do I make myself clear?" She arched an eyebrow at the woman, who was currently staring daggers at her. Light! It was like looking at Soradrelle in a dress, so alike the two were. At last she received a grudging nod and a mumbled, 'Yes Tira Sedai.' Satisfied, she turned to address the rest of the class.

"Now, you all seem to have some basic idea as to what the blue ajah is about." Turning to specifically address the novice Lilli, Tira gave her a smile and added, "Do not worry child, after only four days in the tower, you are not expected to know everything there is to be taught. That is why you are here, to learn." She hoped through this lesson she would be able to boost the girls confidence a little, it was sad that she was so shy. Once more taking in the entire class with her blue-green gaze, she began. "All of you have the right of it in some ways. The blues are justice oriented, and the large majority of us have some sort of cause which is dear to our hearts. My particular cause is to care for and nurture the Tuatha'an." She got a look of surprise from Allael at that last, but did not acknowledge it.

"It is also true that we have the largest network of eyes and ears in the tower. Though not for the purpose you think, Kirito. The reason our eyes and ears are so extensive, is linked to the different causes our Aes Sedai undertake. Our ajah needs to be aware not only of what is happening in the world, but of what each sister is doing to affect that world. What may not matter to one sister, might matter a great deal to another, and the ajah must be there to prevent conflicts of interest. All Aes Sedai causes are approved through the ajah after long consideration to determine if it could be detrimental to someone else's cause or to the overall aim of the ajah."

The lecture began to take hold of Tira, and she found herself enjoying it immensely. Never had she thought she'd be lecturing on causes and justice, instead she had always thought she would teach battle history, or defensive weaves to prepare young novices for the green, not the blue. Telling the novices about her ajah was exhilarating, to say the least.

"The other side of the blue ajah is about justice. We take extensive study of the laws of all lands in the world, and sister's then go out into the world to help settle matters where law is required. Often we provide an impartial judge, so that a case may not be tainted by bias, or public opinion. Too often, in the heat of emotions, justice can fail to be served, or is served to the wrong person. A blue sister can step in in that case to prevent those things from happening. I believe that is why you'll find as many blue ajah sisters as gray are apt to become advisors to government officials or royalty. Especially if that governments aims happen to fit in whatever cause they have set themselves to. "

"For the first part of this lesson, I would like you to write a short essay. It should be at least two hundred words, and in that essay I would like you to think of a cause you might like to pursue if you were to aim for the blue ajah. I also would like a decent explanation on why you have chosen your particular cause. You have thirty minutes to complete your task, not a moment more. I have a surprise for the next part of the lesson which requires us to be on time, or normally I would not impose a time limit on an essay. You may begin." Tira turned and sat behind the desk at the front of the room while the novices picked up pen and paper to write. A small smile crept to the corner of her mouth-she really hoped they would enjoy the next phase of her lesson.

OOC: Okay novices, here you go. I would like 200 words for the essay and at least another 100 or more detailing the thought process behind it. I have interesting stuff planned for the next part, and the lesson is still open until that part goes up. Then it will be closed. If you are a latecomer, just assume you arrived on time. Have fun, next part will be up in a week.
