“So how are things going for you, Sonja?”

Sonja shifted uneasily in her seat, green eyes flickering up to meet Madeline’s before dropping down once more.

“Fine.”

“Just…fine?”

“Yep. Just peachy.”

The Mistress of Novices gave a laugh, as if Sonja had cracked the world’s funniest joke. She leaned back in her chair, running a hand through her snowy hair, and stared up at the ceiling.

“My dear, I just don’t know what to do with you,” she said after a moment. “You have so much potential, and you’re just…puttering around. I feel like you’re lost.”

“Lost?” Sonja shrugged. “I’m not lost. I’m right here.” Her bland tone took on a edge. “And what’s the matter, anyway? I’ve been good! I haven’t been in trouble since that whole thing with that novice! And believe me, Madeline Sedai, I’ve had a lot of reasons to get in trouble.”

The Green arched a brow, as if to say, “Go on.”

Sonja moved to the edge of her seat. “Do you know how hard it is to be laughed at every day by the other Accepted? They all think I’m a joke! And the novices…!” She scrubbed her hands on her face. “They think I’m another Arwyn or something. And I’m not! I’m nothing like her!”

“No?”

Sonja’s jaw dropped. “You don’t think that, do you?”

“Not at all, daughter. Arwyn’s problems were quite different than yours. She was quite clear in who she was and what she wanted, and unfortunately, that was all wrong. You, as I said, are a bit lost. You’re fumbling.”

“I’m not fumbling!”

“Of course you are.” Madeline sat up in her chair, leaning forward to fix the Accepted with that eagle-eye stare that she had. “Sisters from every Ajah have approached you, and come away empty handed. You’ve worn that ring for two years, and you’re no closer to seeking an Ajah than you were the day you stepped out of the Arches. I’m certain you have Talents, but you haven’t expressed any interest in finding them. You don’t slack at your studies, true, but you don’t have any focus. You’re sprawling about aimlessly.”

Sonja bit her lip. That was true enough, but how was that her fault? Accepted were supposed to find their own direction, and if they didn’t find it…

Madeline finished her thoughts for her. “Normally I would have taken you by the hand and pulled you in a direction if you couldn’t find one, but I haven’t wanted to do that. You need to find your own path. But if you keep wandering around in circles, I’m afraid you’ll never get anywhere.”

Sonja heaved a sigh. “Well I’m sorry I’m such a colossal disappointment, Madeline Sedai. I’ve told you a million times I’m probably not right for this place. Maybe my ‘path’ isn’t here. Maybe it’s across the ocean, or out in the Waste, or…somewhere. I don’t know.”

“Do you feel like you’re ready to teach again?”

Now where had that come from? Light but the woman jumped about like grease on a griddle.

“Um…” she said, not sure how to answer. She tugged at a lock of straw-colored hair, curling it round her finger. She hated not having the authority that was due to her, but she also hated teaching. “I don’t know. Maybe.”

“Maybe.”

“Yep. Maybe.”

This time, Madeline’s smile looked nearly a threat. “Well then, Accepted, I have a novice for you. Her name is Gwendolyn al’Calhoun, and she is need of a mentor. Think you can handle it?”

Sonja’s lip jutted out stubbornly. “I can handle anything.”

“Of course you can.”

Pausing, Sonja added, “Does this mean I get my…authority back? That my penance is over?”

“Consider this your test, Accepted. See how well you can handle this novice, and we’ll go from there.”

~*~

The note left on the novice lesson board was a ragged scrap with letters in a blocky, child-like hand. Sonja’s penmanship had never really improved, but then, she had never really worked on it.

Novice Gwendolyn al’Calhoun,

I’ll meet you in the Petitioner’s hall tomorrow at Prime. Don’t be late.

Accepted Sonja Meranes
