A New Task

Soradrelle awoke early in his room, and revelled in the fact that month of Novice duties that was over, though it had been for several weeks. He hadn’t expected it to be so tiring, having not been a Novice for a long time, and working in the infirmary for most of his novicehood. Rising from his bed, he dressed quickly in his banded whites, and tied his hair back with the belled yellow thong. He wasn’t Tuatha’an, any longer, it was true, but he would always love color and music. He hastily pocketed the note he’d been given the day before, and headed out for his customary early morning walk in the gardens. The fresh air invigorated him, and the gardens were always, particularly in the mornings, full of memories.

After sunrise, Sora turned to return to the Tower itself, and thence towards the Novice quarters - he had a new task today. Glancing again at the note now in his hand, then at the listing of Novices and their room numbers, he wondered if this would be anything at all like his job regarding Risa, the young Novice girl he was tasked with convincing to remain in the Tower, and doubted it. Dempsey was male, and would require a lesson in Seizing; Risa was female, and even if she had required such a lesson Sora would have been in no position to teach it. Further, Dempsey required an introduction to the White Tower, not convincing to stay - perhaps he would require the latter, eventually, but for now the choice was entirely out of his hands. Sora shrugged and, perhaps the least bit unsure of himself, headed into the Novice Quarters to knock politely on the young man’s door.

Sora thought he detected, through the wood, an indulging, arrogant sigh, as if the one on the other side of the door had decided to be charitable and humor his molester. “Enter” a shrill, presumptuous voice came, and Sora frowned slightly in irritation. Just who did this boy think he was? Still, he would be polite. And if this child didn’t learn from example, well. . . he would learn another way. Sora opened the door, inclined his head graciously. The boy was small, much shorter than Sora’s at least average height, though he was plump to Sora’s slender build. Sora recognized an exaggerated reflection of his own slightly delicate features, but made nothing of that. Still, he did seem a child indeed, not someone like his twin sister, Allael, just caught at age thirty and named “girl.” No, Dempsey was a short, plump child, not possibly a day older than Sora had been when he’d come to the Tower, and probably several years younger. Or perhaps the ghost of a child - his skin and Novice Whites seemed to match perfectly, and Sora couldn’t tell for sure which was paler. Cairheinin, then, definitely. And they never grew too tall, so perhaps Dempsey was as old as Sora had been, after all. Though the high pitched, child’s voice still suggested otherwise. . . Sora smothered his curiosity - asking the boy’s age would be impolite, and irrelevant as well. As long as he was a Novice, he was a child. Not that Sora would address him so without need. “Novice Dempsey? I am Accepted Soradrelle. I am here to help you get aquatinted with the Tower.”

You know the drill, I think. ;) 300 words.
