It was almost physically painful for Soradrelle to watch Dempsey taking the petitioner’s cloaks and coats - he was clearly not even trying to be humble, apparently preferring instead to be rude. Well, if he thought that being uncooperative would make Sora relieve him of his duties, he was much mistaken. Even so, when the half hour had elapsed Sora almost eagerly retrieved Dempsey from the hall. At least he was cooperating to a degree - attitude would follow later. He hoped. Watching Dempsey coolly, he considered his next step. His expression hardened, however, as the boy looked him over in the way he’d seen some of the younger males of the Tower - Gaidin trainees, Novices, and Accepted alike - the way he’d seen some of them stare at girls. Or perhaps it was more like the way some of the flightier female novices watched the boys. Either way, it didn’t amuse him - it reminded him too much of how a certain Accepted had looked at Tira before he’d tried to rape her, and the way certain bandits had looked at Allael in the same circumstances.

“We will do this each day,” he said at length, “until I feel that you’ve learned humility. And, in the future, if anyone refuses to give you his or her cloak or coat, you will be disciplined for each refusal.” Sora did not elaborate on how Dempsey would be disciplined - truthfully he hadn’t thought that far along, yet. He kept the Way of the Leaf, so a good switching was out, and he reluctantly decided against asking Tira to do his dirty work for him - as much as she might enjoy teaching Dempsey some respect, it would be as much a violation of the Way for Sora to ask her to use her hairbrush on him as if he himself struck the boy. Ah well, let his imagination ponder what Sora might do to him. He doubted the boy would take him seriously the first time, and he would have to give some thought to it, but he could hope.

“Follow quickly. I am going to teach you how to seize Saidin.”

With that, Soradrelle spun on his heel and walked rapidly with long strides down the halls, smiling slightly as Dempsey trotted on his short legs to keep up. He led the boy to one of the rooms reserved for teaching Novices seizing or embracing - a largely empty room filled with pillows scattered across the floor. “Take a seat, child,” he commanded, electing, himself, to remain standing. Anything to suggest humility to this arrogant noble. . . Again, Sora resisted the temptation of entertaining the notion of how quickly Dempsey might learn humility for Tira. . . but that might come in due course in any case, even without Sora’s involvement. And it would very likely come from the Mistress of Novices, at least. Accepted Soradrelle was by no means alone in his desire to humble the proud.

Sora caught Dempsey’s expression - the boy seemed winded, no doubt due to his trot through the halls, and he seemed angry as well, but there was something else. . . “Do you have something to say, Novice?”

It grated Dempsey considerably to bow to passing Accepted, to stare at the novices with equality. He was tired however, and he was making no progress in his fight against the Tower's ridiculous... more
