I think I could eat a horse!

Afailla listened closely to everything her instructor said, trying her best to commit it to memory, so that even if it didn’t make sense at just that moment, she’d be able to mull it over later and figure out just what Reese had meant. While the woman spoke, Afailla thought she caught a hint of a smile once or twice, something around the eyes . . .. But just as quickly, it would be gone, and the Soldier would tell herself not to be ridiculous, or to stop imagining things that weren’t there. When asked if she knew whether she had the spark, she nodded slightly. “They told me I could learn, but I think they only did that because I’m as old as I am. I don’t – I mean, I didn’t – have the spark.” The woman continued speaking, and at her assurance that saidar would eventually come to her as thoughtlessly as breathing, Afailla couldn’t help but hurumph a bit doubtfully.

When asked if she’d been settled in, the Soldier nodded – after being given her uniform and filled in on some of the most basic rules and details, she’d been herded off straight there, feeling as though she were mostly being stuck out of the way until they were ready to deal with her. She supposed it was no different than what anyone else experienced, but it had made her feel rather insignificant. Of course, that had been until she’d touched the Power . . ..

The Dedicated went on to tell Afailla precisely where her own rooms were – not that any of the landmarks meant a thing to her at this point – and the Shienaran nodded, filing away the information to ask someone about later, should she need it. She could already tell that memory was going to be a very big part of what she needed to perfect in her time at the Black Tower.

When she was told to go eat, Afailla nodded, finally managing a grateful smile as she let herself relax a bit. Now that the other woman had mentioned it, she did feel a bit of a rumble in her gut telling her to feed it. Reese stood, and Afailla hastily followed suit, starting to curtsy as she’d seen the Novices do to the Aes Sedai and even to the Accepted in her brief time visiting the White Tower. But, oddly enough, the Dedicated forestalled her. Not only that, but she parted with . . . a compliment. As Reese walked off, Afailla stood stunned for a few moments before turning and hurrying off to find where she was supposed to go to eat. Things certainly seemed quite different here . . ..

After much searching and asking of directions (which usually didn’t help, because people assumed she knew all of the landmarks already), Afailla managed to stumble into the mess area, but by the time she’d gotten there, she found herself with less than half her allotted time to eat and get back to her lesson. Worried that she might not make it if she stayed to eat, she simply grabbed a few of the more portable edibles – rolls, some stuffed with meats, fruit, and a few other things that she could stick into her pockets that wouldn’t goosh and make a mess everywhere if she forgot about them. In a hurry, she set off to find where she was supposed to be again, eating as she walked. After all, if she arrived early, she could always eat there, and at least then she wouldn’t be late . . ..

Afailla had been sitting down for all of five minutes, stuffing her face as quickly as she could so that her stomach wouldn’t betray her naivety during the remainder of the lesson, when Reese returned, looking calm and serene. The Shienaran quickly wolfed down what was left in her hand (just a few bites, luckily) and then dusted off the crumbs, flushing a bit from being caught in such an indisposed manner. She swallowed a bit roughly (should have thought to bring some water) and attempted to get her mouth empty again before opening it – too late; Reese had already started talking, which was perhaps for the better.

OOC: Heh; I couldn't resist having her get lost.... Far too tempting. ^_^
