"Normal" Life Resumes

A week after the battle, there was little sign that anything out of the ordinary had happened around the Black Tower. Here and there was an empty bunk, or a familiar face missing from a lesson, but life went on. Major Lemaine had won a smashing victory over the Seanchan Captain-General, and the Black Tower would not waste unnecessary time either celebrating victory or mourning its dead. This weighed on Toren's mind a little, but even if he didn't like it he could at least understand the Black Tower mentality. When you're preparing for Tarmon Gai'don, everything else looks like a minor distraction.

There was one small change. True to his word, Asha'man Lars had helped Toren file the paperwork so that he could transfer into Espionage. Toren now spent less of his class time setting things on fire, and instead focused on topics such as Cairhienin politics and how to use the One Power to eavesdrop from a distance. The weaves came relatively easily - a natural aptitude with Spirit proved to be very useful - but some days Toren wondered if he were just too big to be a good spy. It took a larger shadow to hide his bulky frame, and he never seemed to move quite as silently as smaller and lighter classmates. Still, he felt like he had made the right choice. He could do more good for the Tower as a spy than as a frontline combat Asha'man.

Toren was just about to go to dinner after a particularly frustrating afternoon of trying to move quietly across a set of loose floorboards when the Asha'man instructor pulled him aside. "Soldier Toren, there is a lesson tomorrow dealing with the talent of Compulsion. It's a rare talent, but you've shown some ability with Spirit in your lessons so far. I would like you to attend." Toren had been in Espionage long enough to know that an Operative's "I would like you to attend" was roughly equivalent to a Colonel's "Be there, or you'll clean every latrine in the Black Tower without using the One Power!" So he went.

Although the top of her head barely reached Toren's chin, Asha'man Quine was an intimidating woman. She just looked like the sort of person who would be able to compel weak-minded souls into doing her bidding using the One Power. Briefly, she explained the talent before giving a final warning, "For the Soldiers and Dedicated, the unauthorized use of Compulsion on a member or employee of the Tower is punishable by death. There are no exceptions. We allow you to use and practice the weave, but never without permission from an instructor should the victim be an ally of yours. The side-effect of being Compelled is present in a splitting headache. Anyone who suffers such a headache without warning should immediately report it to a superior."

The students began to introduce themselves in an orderly fashion, and Toren was surprised to see that a single white-clad Accepted had joined the lesson. It wasn’t so unusual for a group of White Tower trainees to join a lesson here at the Black Tower, but it struck him as odd that today there was only one. He filed that thought away for future consideration and gave a respectful bow to Asha’man Quine. “My name is Soldier Toren Swain; Spirit is my strongest element.”

OOC: As will probably become obvious, Toren does not actually have the Compulsion talent.
