Battle and Defensive Weaves!

He could not say with any conviction which was a greater deprecation: that he would be teaching alongside a Dedicated or that he would be teaching alongside a woman.

When Lysander had volunteered to teach a lesson–for, in all truth, he rather enjoyed teaching–he had not expected a lesson of this variety. It had not occurred to him that he might be teaching alongside another person; a seizing lesson, maybe, or a weaponry lesson might have him teaching by his lonesome, but he’d not hoped to be teaching anything involving channeling. As such, he’d had to find a woman with whom he’d partner, which had proved to be a slippery slope. He could not present the offer to any female Asha’man without inherently giving them the impression that he favoured them, or that he was considering them for the position of Tsorovan’m’hael. People were power-hungry, he’d soon learned, and he’d not give them delusions of grandeur.

As such, he’d picked a Dedicated, and the newest Dedicated at that. Ceto Amaya din Marin Silver Star had been raised very recently, and so he decided on a whim that she would teach in tandem with him. After leaving her a letter detailing the lesson’s itinerary, he’d been on his way, and that was that.

Stepping out into the sunshine, Lysander shielded his eyes. The molten sun was bright enough to blind an army at this hour. It was just past midday, and the Soldiers and Dedicated would have finished eating their lunch by now. Smiling quietly to himself, Lysander left his house behind, letting his rhythmic steps carry him across the cobbled path into the pith of the Tower. Though summer was past its solace, heat exhaustion among many of the recruits was evident.

It’s a hard life, he conceded, though they will be cuendillar by the time they are Asha’man. If not stronger.

Lysander was not an especially tall man, but he tried to carry himself with a presence that appeared nonetheless venerable. Whether it had any effect, he was oblivious. Though not a remarkably handsome man, Lysander’s face was all smooth curves and round, unassuming arcs. He had an olive complexion and dark hair that was now naught but stubble atop his head. His grey eyes drew in the Tower sights as he pressed forth in the direction of the Blasting Grounds. A volatile lesson demanded nothing but the Blasting Grounds. Eventually, however, they would leave the Grounds–nay, the whole Tower–behind, though that was some time away.

Stepping onto its rough, irregular terrain, Lysander was pleased to note that the woman was there waiting for him. She bowed upon spying him, and he nodded. “Good morning, Dedicated,” he murmured.

Not missing a beat, Ceto Amaya said politely, “Good morning, M’Hael.”

He blinked, peering at her dryly. The conversation was absolutely scintillating.

And so he waited for the recruits. . . .

"I have to go, Isura," Ceto Amaya said, giving her friend a hurried pat on the shoulder and turning to go. Isura opened her mouth to protest – they'd only begun to spar, and Isura wouldn't be willing to break off the competition just yet, especially as Ceto Amaya had been winning – but Ceto Amaya shook her head. "Really, I have to go. I'm helping the M'Hael teach a lesson!"

Isura raised her eyebrows. "In that case, hurry and be off – you should have left already!" She laughed and shoved Ceto Amaya off in the direction that the Sea Folk woman had been heading. Isura knew how focused Ceto Amaya was on furthering her status in the Black Tower; there was no way that she would be even slightly late when something involved the M'Hael himself. When a letter from the M'Hael, asking for her assistance in teaching a lesson in offensive and defensive weaves, had come her way, Ceto Amaya had been quick to respond with a yes. If she did well with this, maybe the M'Hael would keep her in mind for other, more important things.

She walked quickly to the Blasting Grounds, absently touching the silver sword pin on her collar. She'd only received the pin very recently, and still wasn't quite used to seeing it every time she put on her coat or looked in the mirror. Dedicated was only one step away from Asha'man – hopefully, it wouldn't be too long now before the dragon pin accompanied the silver sword. Upon arriving at the Blasting Grounds, she noticed that she'd made it before the M'Hael. This was good… the man would not have to wait for her at all.

Lysander arrived very shortly after she did. He was a rather unassuming man, not what one would think of when thinking of the M'Hael – he was not particularly tall or large, and had a quiet sort of disposition. "Good morning, Dedicated," he said.

Ceto Amaya bowed. "Good morning, M'Hael." Her manners were going to be impeccable throughout this.

The students began arriving not too long after. When a fair-sized crowd had been gathered, Lysander said, "Introduce the lesson, and then get their names."

Ceto Amaya stepped out in front of the students. "Good afternoon," she said, smiling. "I am Dedicated Ceto Amaya din Marin and this, of course, is your M'Hael Lysander. Today's lesson will deal with both offensive and defensive weaves to be used in battle. While most people, I imagine, think of mainly offensive weaves – that is, weaves used to attack and eventually incapacitate your opponent – when they think of battle, defensive weaves are extremely important as well. If you cannot defend yourself from attack, you likely will not live long enough to formulate an attack yourself."

"Now, I would like you all to please go around and state your name, rank, and Track, and then we can begin."

OOC: Alright, this lesson is for both Soldiers and Dedicated looking to get Battle and Defensive Weaves credit. You can also get both credits in this lesson if you're willing to put in a little extra writing. This is of course a good opportunity to get credits you may be needing – and dual-credit lessons are tons of fun – so we're looking for lots of participation here! Also, Soldiers, you need to have your seizing/embracing credit before you can join this lesson.
