I don't think I'm ready for battle...

Afailla had been practicing almost non-stop since her Embracing lesson. She’d gotten permission from Dedicated Reese, and even received a few pointers here and there from the same. This was the main reason she had chosen the Black Tower over the White – here, she was encouraged to channel as much as she wanted, to learn for herself, to strengthen herself and practice as much as she wished. If she’d been in the other Tower, she would have been held back, punished for channeling without permission, and kept from finding out things that she “wasn’t supposed to know.” This much alone would have made her decision the right one, but since arriving, Afailla had found countless other things to support her decision.

She had managed, thus far, to separate what each of the elements was, and how it felt to her. She’d even accomplished holding onto the Power under very small amounts of stress. That was as much time as she’d had so far, but she was quite proud of her accomplishments. When news had reached her about the unusual lesson – Battle weaves and Defense weaves in one lesson – she had at first been a bit reluctant. But, after some consideration, and once she learned that it was open to Soldiers, even those as inexperienced as herself, she had decided to give it a try. Hopefully she wouldn’t come off as too much of a fool.

The day of the lesson, Afailla rose fairly early and set about getting ready. Nothing had been specified about what to wear, so she assumed that a dress would be acceptable. They had shoved a pair of trousers into her arms her first day along with the rest of her dresses, but she hadn’t yet been required to wear them. Once she’d put on one of her (all black) dresses and pulled on her (black) boots, she tied up her bright hair into what was quickly becoming her trademark loose bun, securing it with a (black) strip of leather. The color was quickly getting to be her least favorite, and she’d only been here about a week. The years ahead were looking rather . . . black.

Stifling a sigh, Afailla made one last check of her uniform to be sure that everything was in place, and then stepped outside. The heat hit her like a brick wall, and she had to force herself not to sigh. She had the feeling that this was going to be a long day, for while she could create enough of a breeze to keep herself cool, she wouldn’t have the time or the energy to do so once the lesson started. Might as well get used to the oven-like conditions now.

As she walked across the compound towards the Blasting Grounds, Afailla realized what had been bothering her ever since her arrival. How it had taken her this long to realize that the faint queasiness in her stomach wasn’t nerves, she had no idea. She hoped she wasn’t getting sick – that simply wouldn’t do. But either way, she felt fine aside from her stomach, and she wasn’t about to miss a lesson that sounded this exciting. Who knew when she’d get another chance to learn these weaves, anyway?

As Afailla approached the Blasting Grounds, she noticed that there were a couple figures already there, both dressed in solid black. Had his reputation not preceded him, she would have never guessed that the man of the pair was the M’Hael, but she nodded respectfully to him before the woman, stopping herself just short of curtsying. Apparently, that wasn’t as encouraged here as it seemed to be at the other Tower. The woman, she didn’t recognize at all. She did, however, notice the pin of a Dedicated, so she stopped a respectful distance away from the two respected figures, just in case they wanted some privacy.

Before long, the other students started arriving, and when enough of them had gathered (though who decided what was enough she had no idea), the woman that she didn’t recognize stepped forward and began the lesson. The name didn’t mean a thing to her, except that the woman was either of the Sea Folk, or some other exotic part of the world that she was just as unfamiliar with. But, when it came her turn to answer the questions, she did so promptly, ready to just get the formalities out of the way and find out what (exactly) they would be doing today.

“I am Soldier Afailla Dafrin, and I’m a Jack.” She left it at that, figuring that the “of all trades” was pretty much implied. That done, she turned her attention to waiting for the others to finish, so that the lesson could really begin.

OOC: Yay, a lesson! ^_^
