Part ID: Keep Your Guard Up

Ceto Amaya blinked at the slim, pale man who seemed to have shown up entirely unprompted. She knew him through reputation – Asha'man Locke Lemain. This was confirmed both by Lysander addressing him as "Asha'man" and by the enameled dragon pin on his collar. But… an Asha'man at a lesson for Soldiers and Dedicated? What under the Light is he doing here?

"It would be my great honor to be instructed by you today," Locke said, rising from a bow. Ceto Amaya was successful in keeping her confusion from her face, but not by much; this was very odd indeed. Nevertheless, they continued with the lesson – there were more important things to be done than standing around wondering about the inner workings of a certain Asha'man's mind.

Once everyone had been introduced, Lysander further explained the lesson, elaborating on the double credit aspect. He was to teach those who wished to learn the offensive weaves while Ceto Amaya was to teach the defensive weaves that he had instructed her in previously. Ceto Amaya examined the group who had come to her, and began to speak.

"As I said, it is important to know how to defend oneself," she said, standing with her hands clasped behind her back. "Granted, the offensive is often more fun, but without some knowledge of defensive maneuvers, you won't get to use those interesting offensive techniques very much."

"Now, a very useful method of defense is the shield. There are two types of shields that I will be teaching you today – one, which the Soldiers will learn, is a basic shield that can be used to cut someone from the True Source. The Dedicated will be learning a shield similar to this one, but for one difference… this particular shield stretches. The basic shield, though useful, has its flaws; one of these is that it is possible to break through, though not particularly easy. Also, if you're trying to shield someone who's stronger than you, it's generally not very effective, unless you're either very good at shields or very strong in Spirit. However, this particular stretching shield solves those problems… as the name suggests, the shield poses no danger of shattering when someone attempts to break it, as it will only stretch when someone tries to escape from it."

"This is the basic shield, the one the Soldiers will practice with," she continued, quickly weaving a disc-shaped sort of thing and feeling thankful that she was strong in Spirit, if not in the Power itself. She felt a slight tingle and looked over at Lysander, who had come over for a moment to demonstrate for the males of the group, and saw that he appeared to be weaving as well. "One thing that you need to be cautious of – do not make the edges of the shield too sharp. Your aim is to temporarily cut your opponent off from the One Power, not to still them." She held the shield for a moment longer to make sure the Soldiers saw it, and then allowed it to dissipate.

"The weave for the stretching shield is similar to that of the basic shield in most ways, but for one fundamental difference – this shield also contains Air, which is what provides its flexibility." She began to weave once more. "The shape is the same; you merely add Air into the weave." For each thread of Spirit there was also a thread of Air, meaning that the shield behaved like a sort of very strong pillow – if rammed into, it would merely mold around said attack. "As for tying off these weaves, a basic shield can be tied off, although if it is, it can be unraveled with time. The stretching shield should be maintained in the event that it may start to wear out after some attempts to be broken."

"Now, everyone understands these weaves?" she asked, smiling at the class. "Alright; what I'd like you to do is pair off and practice on each other – Soldiers practice the basic shield, and Dedicated practice the stretching one. One person will practice shielding, while the other, the one being shielded, will try to break through the shield; you'll trade off who does what each time until I tell you to stop. Remember, please watch the edges of your shields: do not make them too sharp. Enjoy yourselves!"

OOC: Alright, part one for defensive weaves! You'll just do as she's said… pair off and work on shielding. You can either pair off with an NPC or with another person; I'll let you work that out among yourselves. Just do one of each thing – try shielding someone, then try breaking out of a shield. Soldiers work with the basic shield, Dedicated work with the stretchy one. Have fun! And remember, you can also do the battle weaves part of the lesson, taught by your lovely M'Hael Lysander, if you want double credit. 400 words for this, please, and the next part will be up in a week.
