Part IB: Fireballs and Filaments
Thu Aug 24, 2006 20:51 (XFF:

He had half a mind to order Asha’man Locke from the lesson, and the reason in this was given in the other man’s title. Locke was an Asha’man–a word plucked from the Old Tongue as to mean “guardian.” As such, there was guarding in this world to be done. Battles to be waged. Missions to be executed. Lessons–lessons even besides this one–to be taught. And what was Locke doing? He was standing there . . . apparently looking to take part? That was idiotic. As a wearer of the Dragon pin, he would already have learned these weaves in lessons passed. His presence was superfluous.

Not that Lysander revealed these ruminations, however. If Locke got behind in his work, the fault of this would not come crashing down on Lysander’s head. He wore a measured gaze, peering at Locke and the other initiates.

“This will be divided simply,” he intoned, peering at each in turn. “Many of you already will have been educated either in defence or offence, which is why you may choose to follow the weaves in which you are ignorant. Those of you with experience in neither can choose to either learn solely defensive methods or offensive methods–or, if you are up for the challenge, both.” Those who wished to study both would need dedication indeed, though he wouldn’t have given them the option if he deemed it impossible. “Dedicated Ceto Amaya will teach defensive tactics, while I will edify you as to offensive methods.”

Smiling quietly to himself, Lysander held out his hands almost as if to invite answers. “When one thinks of offense, what elements come to mind?” The recruits were diligently silent to begin, though they began shouting out answers at his approval.

Lysander nodded. “Those are the two most common answers. This is simply because the Power allows these two elements to create entities out of nothing. Fire can be created without tinder, and objects of Air can be created from silence. Earth and Water, while useful in many situations, are not quite as practical. While Earth and Water can be appended to many weaves, Earth alone cannot be woven to create a rock, and Water alone cannot be channeled to create an ocean. Instead, these elements manipulate one’s surroundings, with Earth manipulating the stones that surround us–” And he gestured at once to the crags and jagged rock beds of the Blasting Grounds. “–and Water altering the condition of water supplies, from the moisture in the air to even the Sea of Storms.

“As such, the first weave we will learn will be of Fire, which can be used in any practical scenario. Soldiers, the first weave you will learn will be a fireball.”

Touching the True Source, Lysander made it known at once that he was holding saidin, exposing his self to the volatility that the Power held. His skin prickled as the Dedicated embraced. She would weave in unison with him, demonstrating offensive weaves for the women. He held out as his hand, and channeled skeins of red-hot Fire slowly to demonstrate. They shaped themselves into a perfect sphere, which lit as the weave was completely. The Dedicated held a sphere, too. “The fireball weave naturally hovers above one’s hand. To use it, a physical motion is usually required, and is the easiest method possible to make the fireball mobile. First, however, we will add some excitability to it.” Lysander then channeled verdant Earth, infusing the threads within the fireball. “The Earth is an important addition. You will see why.” Grunting, Lysander hurled the ball of hot flames; it travelled through the air before coming in contact with a flat mass of stone. The Earth triggered an explosion, leaving in its wake a crater. Ceto Amaya’s did the same a mere few feet to the right, though a weakness in Fire on her behalf was evident in the crater’s smaller size. “As you can see, fireballs with Earth explode. Soldiers, I want you to practise with this, forming fireballs both without Earth and with. Try to perfect your aim, using boulders and similar protrusions as your target. You can attempt fireballs of various sizes and numbers to perfect your skills.”

He then turned his attention to the Dedicated, peering at them levelly. “Fireballs are simple for you, which is why you will be learning something more complex: Arrows of Fire. This weave will create red-hot filaments of Fire that are of a higher temperature than well-nigh of any weave you will form in the entirety of your lifespan. Arrows of Fire, yes. They bore holes in the enemy, boiling their blood enough to kill. Where a fireball might leave a Trolloc or a Myrddraal intact in most cases, Arrows of Fire are almost as sure to kill as balefire.” Lysander turned, holding out his hand in the direction of a series of stone fixtures. “Like the fireball weave, it is necessary that one holds out one’s hand with the palm down and the fingers outstretched.” Weaving Fire and Earth in a very precise matrix at the tip of each finger–yes, Earth, which seemed an odd addition to any weave titled only with Fire–Lysander sent five needle-thin red filaments shooting from his appendages. They bore clean holes through stones; their incredible heat caused the stone surrounding the hollow to melt. Ceto Amaya demonstrated once more with saidar for the women. “While the fireball used against stones is more volatile, Arrows of Fire are more difficult–and are exceedingly caustic when used against Shadowspawn.

“Dedicated Ceto Amaya will now demonstrate her own weaves for you. Once she is finished, you may practise.” He gave a glance to Locke. “I suppose you can play with more complex weaves of your own, if you so choose. Blossoms of Fire might give you a good divertissement.”

OOC: This lesson is still open, which is why I added the bit for Dedicated. ^_-; 400 word minimum of you character performing the weave, and you can play around with the fire a bit to have some fun. Remember, you’re allowed to reply to both this and Part ID if you do choose if you want to get double-credit! Part II will be up in a week.
