Oooh...A Deadly Weapon!
Wed Sep 20, 2006 18:14 (XFF:

Shayla couldn’t stop thinking about what she had done during the battle against the Seanchan. Did those idiot Asha’man actually ever get rescued?...More importantly, though, I wonder if that Darkfriend’s mistress will contact me. ‘Twould result in a great honor. The Soldier stopped to look at the list of available lessons. Knives…a private lesson…another private lesson…knives is the only interesting one, so I guess I’ll take that lesson. Shayla made he way through the barracks to the Tower’s training area. A few Soldiers were already there, some talking with each other--is that an Initiate of the White Tower? thought Shayla incredulously. Whatever, I’ll just have to ignore them and stay out of their paths.

The instructor, or at least, the person she presumed to be the instructor, was lounging against the wooden barrier, with one foot on a crate. Shayla couldn’t see his eyes, but she was ready to swear that their gaze was palpable as it passed over her. Shayla herself was avidly examining the other participants, wondering if any had taken part in the Battle, and if she knew them. The woman was almost expecting to see Laila there as well, but then remembered that the Seanchan woman was a Dedicated now.

Shayla continued to be self-absorbed as the other Soldiers and Initiates arrived for the lesson, at least until the instructor’s rather loud, “Shut it!” cut her short.

“This is how it works,” he was saying. You know, he looks vaguely familiar… “You introduce yourselves. Tell me your name, rank, and any prior experience you’ve had with knives.” Same old, same old. Everyone always asks for the same things. The only difference here is that he has given us nothing about him, much less his bloody name.

“Begin!” This…Asha’man?, Dedicated obviously expected the group to begin the introductions at once. Shayla waited until a few of the others had introduced themselves—she hated being the first one. The Soldier approached the teacher with her usual confidence and self-assurance, then introduced herself.

“I am Soldier Shayla, and what I know of knives probably isn’t even enough to fill a bloody bucket.” Normally, Shayla didn’t like to admit to her shortcomings, but when she did, she made sure that at least someone got a laugh as a result. Having done as asked, the Soldier went back to where she’d been standing and watched as the rest of the group as they did the same. She couldn’t wait to learn about knives; Chaos is ever so much fun to cause, and deadly weapons tend to do the trick quite nicely. Shayla laughed softly to herself at the thought, amusement dancing in her eyes.
