Part II: Helping to Heal

She watched, mutely pleased, as the recruits performed Delving without difficulty. Well, without much difficulty. It was a tricky weave. Still, they rose to the challenge, and poor Delahurst looked a little uneasy after having been plunged and plunged again into the icy barrel that was Delving. Still, the boy held up, as Myrth looked on as Gentry Healed him. Soon, the lad was on his feet, and he marched straightly from the Infirmary. Surprisingly quickly, too.

“You seemed to have mastered Delving,” Gentry said with a gruff edge to his voice, “but Delving is still only a leaf compared to the tree that is Healing. Far less complex, but an inherent part of it.”

Myrth smiled, peering over each of them in turn. “Now, I will now illuminate you regarding Healing theory. Spirit is the core of all Healing weaves. To perform a Healing weave without Spirit, well, you might as well be trying to perform it without the One Power. However, the other four spheres of the Five Powers are auxiliary. Where they’re not so central to the weave’s success, they still play a role. The traditional method of Healing involves only Spirit, Water, and Air, but we have come to realize that Fire and Earth also can actively participate. The traditional method of Healing will cure all the wounds on one’s body. For example, if I were to attempt to Heal someone of a torn ligament using Spirit, Water, and Air, my weave would also cure an incidental bloody nose. The traditional method is encompassing. The newer method, involving all four of the Five Powers or simply Spirit, Fire, and Earth, is specific. If I were to cure that ligament, the ligament would be cured, but other maladies would go unchecked.

“What, then, is the purpose of the newer method? After all, if Spirit, Water, and Air Heals all at once, and the others Heal in limited supply, what is the use? Specific, more complicated injuries can be Healed. Stilling, for example, requires Spirit and Fire to be cured. Wounds of the Shadow, though never entirely extinguishable, are best attempted with Spirit and Earth. My own Yellow Ajah is theorizing that specific heart conditions too complex for the other spheres might be able to be cured with Fire, though this is speculation.”

Gentry nodded, saying, “On the battlefield, Spirit, Water, and Air will suffice in most cases. Burns, gashes, puncture wounds–you may use whichever elements are most comfortable for you.”

“Today,” Myrth continued, chiming on, “I will ask that you create a Healing weave Spirit with your two strongest elements that are not Spirit. This will make it easier on you, I daresay. In my case, this will be Air and Water. In Gentry’s case, it will be Earth and Fire. Now, I have explained which elements perform what kind of Healing. Within this selection of elements, however, there are numerous types of weaves. Different quantities of elements, different shapes of weaves, different forms. Healing is a study for its complexity. You will learn a basic variation that should cure a simple infliction. It is done like so.”

Weaving, Myrth formed the Healing weave with a deliberate slowness to allow them so see exactly how she was creating it. Spirit, Air, and Water looped in intricate patterns, synchronizing with twin threads forming its barriers. It all twisted and turned to a point, an acme. It would Heal. Myrth let the weave fade, and then channeled again, allowing the recruits to see its demonstration a second time. They would likely never have attempted something as complex. Their results would be . . . interesting.

“I do not expect you to pick this up on your first attempt. I would like you to practice with the weave on your own, maybe testing it on a partner, before attempting to use it on a victim. After all, for how dangerous these weaves could potentially be. . . .” Myrth left her sentence hanging, smiling in spite of the situation. “When you are done, we will, as a group, visit each of the cots in turn. I will select one of you at random to treat the victim–that is, using both Delving and Healing. Should it turn out that you have the Talent, you will most likely succeed. If you don’t have the Talent but range from either strong to average in Spirit, you might be able to cure a scrape or bruise. Should you not have the Talent and Spirit is not your strong point, well, Gentry or I will assist. Good luck.”

OOC: And now you Heal! Now, the injuries you come across certainly won’t be close to life threatening–a bleeding gash, a burn, and so on. If Spirit is your first, second, or third-ranked element, you might be able to Heal something simple, but even a deep cut or a bruise will likely be too much; you might only Heal half of it if that’s the case. Anyway, 400 words minimum, and Part III in a week! This lesson is still open to newcomers.
