Part III: A Short Drop and a Sudden Stop
Sun Oct 1, 2006 02:59 (XFF:

Styr watched his students with a mixture of pleasure and irritation. Pleasure, because they were succeeding rather admirably at his task. Irritation at that pleasure he was feeling. This was no time to go soft on them, just because they’d finally got the fact that this was a lesson through their thick skulls.

Turning away, he frowned as he drew a little deeper on the Power and erected the last part of his structure. Looking over his shoulder, he could already see some of the Initiates stopping work to stare at the strange construct, and barely suppressed a chuckle. When they found out what it was for, he could guarantee they would rather take another of his boring lectures.

‘All right, halt.’ He barely needed to say the words. In an instant, Soldier, Dedicated and Accepted alike had stopped work and snapped into ranks. Styr smiled ruefully. Perhaps he wasn’t such a bad tutor after all.

‘Now, would anyone like to hazard a guess as to the purpose of what you see before you?’ His rueful smile had turned into a sadistic grin. ‘No? Let me demonstrate.’

Shrieks of surprise and the ranks turned to watch as two black-coated Soldiers rose into the air. Not bothering to muffle his cold chuckles, Styr wrapped them neatly in flows of Air strengthened with Earth, and floated them up to the top of his structure. Sweating slightly from the strain of using Air, he dropped them gently onto the pinnacle.

The construct was formed of some twenty trees, roughly stripped of branches and leaves to leave only a cable-like shape some fifty feet or more high. They were all of a height and width with each other; just wide enough to stand on and tall enough for a fall to be life-threatening. Each pole was spaced within stepping distance of its brothers, and the two Soldiers perched precariously on either side of the small field of poles.

Floating two pairs of ‘real’ knives up to the pair, Styr magnified his voice with Fire and Air so they could hear.

‘Your task is this, ladies and gents: You are to utilize the skills you’ve learnt today to try and knock your opponent from the Poles. If neither of you has completed the task by the time five minutes is up, then you shall both suffer a short drop and a sudden stop.’ Styr had to stop himself from bubbling with mirth at the horrified looks on his students’ faces. He had ‘forgotten’ to tell them about the net of Air below the Poles that would catch them, but perhaps the thought that he might actually let them drop to their deaths would be incentive to try harder.

‘We will, of course, have someone on hand for Healing any wounds sustained. Just try not to inflict any particularly nasty wounds up there. I’d hate to have to explain the death of a student to the M’Hael. Begin! You have five minutes!’

OOC: Now here’s a sadistic conclusion to the lesson! I think the lesson speaks for itself. 600 words on using the knife skills from the rest of the lesson while trying to keep your balance on the Pole-tops. You can hop from pole to pole etc. You’ve got ‘til Thursday to finish the lesson, or ask for an extension. It’s been a pleasure. *Grins*~Tom
