To Kill with Healing

Shayla was shocked, almost to her core. An Asha’man?!...What in the Great Lord’s name is an Asha’man doing attending a lesson?...And why?...There must be a reason, for the Asha’man do not need lessons, especially not ones intended for Soldiers and Dedicated…Whatever. I’m sure I shall find out in due time. Shayla was puzzled, and as she listened to the Aes Sedai, continually took peeks at the Asha’man participating in the lesson.

“This killing weave, though capable of stopping the heart, is impractical in most situations, as a simple razor of Air can do as much. The weave nonetheless looks like so,” said Myrth Sedai. Shayla watched avidly, finding this to be one of the more interesting points. The Aes Sedai made a complex weave of Fire and Spirit, which Shayla tried her best to memorize. Myrth Sedai continued by demonstrating the weave actually used for Healing, which simpy substituted Water and Air for Fire. Shayla followed the Aes Sedai as she led the group into the infirmary, and then into the Treatment Room. The Asha’man explained the use of the room.

The Soldier chosen by the Aes Sedai for the group to practice Delving on did not look happy at the prospect. Shayla paid close attention as Myrth Sedai made a tangle of Spirit, Water, and Air--this must be the Delving weave… though Shayla, it looks so pretty… Each of the elements’ colors, at least in Shayla’s eyes, blended to create a beautiful mix of blues and purples.

“Each of you will perform Delving on Delahurst before I heal him. Perform the weave to monitor his health exactly as demonstrated, with Water and Air.” Shayla briefly toyed with the idea of switching it for the killing weave, but then realized that the Aes Sedai would be able to tell the difference, landing the Soldier in a very untenable position.

Shayla got into a line with the other Soldiers, Dedicated, and lone Asha’man, and waited to take her turn at Delving. At least five Soldiers stood before her, so she continued to think about what to include in her report. After maybe five to seven minutes, Shayla found herself in front of Delahurst. The Soldier opened herself to the Source, finding it easier to do every time. Starting slowly, Shayla channeled Spirit, adding Water and Air, then weaving the three elements together in a tangle of thread. Spirit goes here, then Water, then Spirit like that, then Air…. Once completed, Shayla thrust the weave into the Soldier on the cot. Whoah!...so, let’s see, he’s got a blister on his left heel…wonder how?...oooh, that’s got to hurt, being burnt like that…and….he’s really tired…is that all I was supposed to do?...Guess so…. Shayla left the cot to stand with the others who had completed the first part of the lesson.
