Part III: Save the Suffering

It grew slowly evident which of the students had the Talent and which did not. For some, the weave came with an almost ridiculous brand of ease–like it had for her when she was but an Accepted. For others, there was a distinct struggle, though they still were able to produce some effect (however limited) in the end. Others still could do nothing. For all they had done, most looked a mite exhausted; she wondered if those were the greener recruits. Again, Healing was like weaving three tapestries at once, and complexity to that degree wore on one’s stamina, suffice to say.

“From here,” Gentry said ambitiously, “we will proceed outside, where a demonstration already has been set up for you on the Green.” Myrth blinked. Already? Why hadn’t she been told of this? Myrth did not let her composure wane, and yet she did not like the idea that the lesson had been planned in advance. It was such a tiny, silly thing, and it still did not sit right with her. The man did not have the right to . . . well, there was no point in crying over spilt milk, or however the saying went.

A short trek carried Myrth and the Black Tower denizens from the Infirmary to the open expanse of the Green, reserved solely for festivals and the like. A memory struck Myrth in surprising haste: following an Asha’man (Jostayn, he had called himself; he’d been Cairhienin like herself) around the Green. And she’d been drunk. Oh, Light, yes. Very, very drunk. A difficult smile crossed her cheeks. It wasn’t her most pleasant memory, but she supposed regretting it wouldn’t give her much solace in anything. Light. And she’d climbed the Traitor’s Tree. Embarrassment wasn’t a strong enough word. . . .

Upon their arrival, Myrth spied several Soldiers lying on the ground, evidently acting as “props” in this little lesson of theirs. Gentry gestured for them to scatter, so to speak, separating themselves from one another, and the elder Asha’man began explaining the task. “Triage is the process of ranking the necessity of Healing based on demand. A gash bleeding heavily will require Healing sooner than an extensive burn, and an extensive burn will require Healing faster than a shallow cut. These Soldiers will act as the victims, and you will have to Heal them.

“They will simply weave Illusions over certain exposed parts of them. An arm, a bared ankle. . . . When you properly Heal them, they will unravel the Illusion, and the wound will be, for all purposes, Healed. You will find a trick to it, though. There are four kinds of Illusions they will weave over themselves–puncture, gash, burn, cut. If a puncture wound is not Healed in ten seconds, the victim will perish. If a gash is not Healed in twenty seconds, the victim will die, too. Burns give you a window of forty seconds and cuts allow you a minute–because in the damp and dirty of a battlefield, a fatal infection needs no more than that to set in.”

An exaggeration, Myrth conceded, but if it’s just for the purposes of the lesson, I suppose.

Gentry continued. “After each Illusion has been Healed, the victim may weave another wound over his or herself, perpetuating the semblance that additional victims are being provided. You will be rushing from victim to victim determining their wound, and you will need to allot your time properly. It would not be economical to Heal something as soon as you see it–as, of course, while you’re Healing cut after cut, puncture wounds and gashes will be figuratively bleeding out. Understood?”

Chiming in, Myrth said, “Because they’re Illusions, it will not matter whether you have the Healing Talent or not. You will get exhausted, though, and it will become gradually more difficult for you to continue rushing.” Sounded right.

“Each individual’s trial will last five minutes, and in that five minutes, you want as few recruits to perish as possible. When one of the victims has decided that you’ve waited too long to Heal their particular malady, they will unravel the Illusion themselves, and that will count for a death. Understood? Well, get to it–you, first. Hasten along.”

OOC: Okay, in case that was confusing . . . five minutes. Your character will be hurrying around a group of Soldiers who have woven Illusions on them representing different kinds of injuries, those which your character will Heal. (They’ll be using and applying the Healing weave, but, of course, it’s each “victim’s” job to unravel the weave. ^_-;) Certain wounds need to be Healed faster than others, and so your character will have to be hasty to avoid as many deaths as possible. Got it? Your character will stand the same chance of having few casualties whether or not s/he has the Talent of Healing, as it’s just a simulation. If you have any questions, email me, and this lesson is now closed! *grins* Credits posted on October 11, so be sure to email me if you need an extension.
