Darius had been trudging along the corridor, lost in thought, the sword at his side weighing him down when he got the summons. His greenish-yellow eyes went wide to know that he was going to be taught by the M'Hael Lysander, the leader himself!

Knowing this, he was understandably anxious to get started. He made sure that he was well rested and fed, though memories hovered almost tangibly over his shoulder and his face still looked gaunt from the weeks of trudging in the caravan as a merchant guard. After finishing the meal he had scrounged up, he left early. He took a wrong turn, and ended up getting there just barely on time. He let out a sigh of relief, and listened attentively to the M'Hael's question.

"Yes, M'Hael Lysander." He hesitated, wondering if he should just jump right in or if he should say how honored he felt by being taught by the M'hael.

"My father was born in Andor, or at least he lived in Andor. We never really heard from him much, as he left us before I was born." Darius drew in a breath, then let it out. "My mother was devastated. She moved back to her village outside of Jakanda, where she had relatives." Not any longer, though, as they all died. Darius stifled the thought, and continued.

"She was happy for a time, until she got pregnant again. I never heard who the father was, and I don't want to know. My sister came into the world, and my mother died as a result."

Darius's eyes became shadowed, old grief overturned in his emotional cauldron. With an effort, he pulled himself together and continued.

"After that, we moved around. My sister learned to knit, I helped around the farm. We pooled our money together, hoping we could buy a house one day. At the time, we just lived where we could, and that usually meant a barn or a spare bedroom."

Darius smiled as he remembered his room, bare and whitewashed, smelling of age and the books he had liked to read.

"I think you know the rest. A..spore of some type affected the crops. It poisoned the village, and they all died but me. And once when I was a kid, I should have drowned in the storm but instead the river seemed to carry me to shore.”

Darius thought for a moment, thinking of the near-death experience of the storm, and what had followed just four weeks later. He began to recall that his sister had been afflicted, but had been cured of the mysterious ailment.

“Also, when the spore blight hit, my sister didn’t die either. With me, it was just that I didn’t eat the spore. With her, she got better in seconds.”

Beautiful display of colour fixed by Mark. :)
