Part III: Ab Origine

Darius and Carasal both voiced questions of the same nature. How had they controlled it? How could one person command such might? “It is an act of incredibility, and yet it is truth nonetheless. This is the way of the world. You will not come to understand it, but if you not had already, you will accept that you can do this. You can channel. You can use such strength. It is within your power.”

The sensation of the men successfully holding the One Power slowly vanished from his mind as they relinquished their hold on the True Source.

“Five spheres of the One Power can be commanded, and these Five Powers are known as such: Fire, Earth, Spirit, Air, and Water. When the One Power is used, this is called channeling or weaving. Weaving is perhaps the more practical word, for what you’re actually doing is using this Power to create threads. These threads have no true physical form, but they come in colours that represent each element. When placed exactly and mixed with other ones of the Five Powers, much as you would weave a colourful tapestry, different effects take place. For example, Fire and Earth can be mixed to create rock explosions, while Air itself can create razors or buffet an opponent. Water can guide the current of a stream and Spirit can be used to trick the mind. While a number of these desired effects can be created, your training will encompass learning as many combat-oriented ones as possible. You’ll have myriad lessons throughout your days in learning as many of these as possible.”

He paused, seizing saidin. The Shadow preserve him, but he enjoyed holding the One Power–and hated that he enjoyed it so! It was necessary if he was to demonstrate one thread of each element, though he did not draw in more than what was strictly needed. He was no hedonist. “To bring a thread into existence, all you need is focus. Imagery may help, such as roiling clouds for Air or storm-tossed oceans for Water. Each channeler will discover their own niches.”

And so he began. “Fire.” It was his strongest element, easily discernible for its size. It was a large, long, and healthy-looking thread, that of a bright, fluorescent red. It spoke of death, for Fire was one of the most potent elements in warfare. As his strongest, Lysander had found more than one use for it, and had vested his confidence in it more than any other one of the Five Powers.

“Earth.” It was a forested shade of green, lively and verdant. It was not nearly as powerful as Fire, of course, though that had never rankled him much. It had little use outside of manipulating stones and metals, and though exploding a stone was a valuable asset, perhaps, there was little to be done with it besides that.

“Spirit.” There was a greater size to this one than Earth, certainly, and Lysander had always rather liked Spirit. While Fire represented a more potent force, Spirit was something of greater subtlety, though contrary to what many believed, it had its uses. Fire, mayhap, represented his duty as a Major, though Spirit represented everything that appealed to Lysander in being an Assassin. A man could not assassinate a man with Spirit, no, but he could do other harms.

“Air, also known as Wind.” While a weakness in Earth was merely a fact of life, Air was something that merited a greater lamentation. Fire was indeed a ripe ally in combat, though Air had certainly advantages that Fire did not. Barricades, pummels–why, one could simply lift a man and shift him to the side with Air. It was then a shame that it was Lysander’s weakest of the element, and his capabilities were comparatively limited. The yellow thread was thin and narrow, difficult to manipulate.

“Water.” The final element, Water, was a royal shade of blue, highly dignified though again, not entirely too practical. There were Asha’man, however, who led overseas assaults with great raker-sized ships, and Water was their life. The commotion they could cause with it. . . . Judging by the slimness to the thread, however, Lysander was not one of those men.

“There we are,” he said. “Depending on the size of each thread, you will have greater control and a more potent strength in it. Men generally are stronger in Earth and Fire, while women are more powerful in Air and Water. Spirit is split between the two. Now, I want you to do what I just did, and conjure a single thread of each element. Once you’ve been able to see each thread and how difficult they were to create, you’ll be able to discern your elemental strengths. Simply tell me your strengths in the order from strongest to weakest and you are dismissed.”
