Mikel’s head hit something hard, and rebounded off. Feeling a slight dizziness, he massaged the spot with his hand. Blood and ashes! Falling asleep at the breakfast table…

He looked around, luckily nobody had noticed. His empty bowl sat on the table beside him, he had finished a while ago. He was surprised that no Asha’man had come around to wake him up. He had heard stories of some to who that had happened, and he was not looking forward to an experience of such.

There was little to do today, in his mind. Oh, there were classes, long, boring classes. But there was hardly anything useful to do. So he decided to stay in the mess hall for a little longer, until something took him away. He started to listen in on a conversation at the next table.

“Garvy,” a pretty redheaded girl was saying to a plain-faced lad, “don’t you pay attention to anything?” The youth shrugged, not saying anything. The girl sighed. “Well, let me tell you then. There’s a Traveling lesson today, in the Northern Yards.”

Mikel’s head perked up. Traveling… He stood up, and walked over to the table. Both occupants looked up as he approached. He spoke to the girl. “Hello. My name is Mikel. To whom do I have the pleasure of speaking to?” The girl stared wide-eyed at him. He knew the effect he had on women. Even back home, the girls swooned when they saw him. He knew, and he knew how to use it to his advantage. It took the girl a few moments to come out of her trance. “Hello Mikel….my name is Carys….nice to meet you…”

Hook, line and sinker. “I just heard you mention something about a Traveling lesson?” Carys took some time in responding again. “Yes…yes I did…it’s over at the Northern Yards…being taught by Asha’man Lara.”

Mikel skimmed over that part without thought. He cared naught for who was teaching, only that there actually was a lesson. “Would you mind showing me where it is? I haven’t been here long enough to learn where everything is.” The lie slipped off his tongue easily. He had already learned the lay of the Tower by heart, it was something he just did. A useful habit. But it might be fun to lead this girl on, she could be useful…

“Of course….I’m new too, but I know my way around…Garvy, would you excuse us?” The plain-faced youth barely gave any indication he had heard. Carys hurried out of the hall, and went right, taking them around the building. The Northern Yards appeared on the other side of the hall. “Well, here we are!” Mikel almost laughed out loud. The girl didn’t even mention the fact that he would have been a complete woolhead to not know where the Northern Yards were. Oh, she was his.

Already a small crowd has gathered in front of two Asha’man. Carys hurried to join the group, Mikel simply chose to walk. Dignity is more important than punctuality…

They got there to hear the end of the speech. Carys gave her information, then it was Mikel’s turn. “Soldier Mikel Ayellfrin O’Cionaoith, 19, Assassin.” Oh, how sweet it would be to begin learning the tricks of that trade. Until then, learning how to travel wherever he wanted to would be an interesting challenge…
