The initiates faced varying degrees of success with their attempts at Skimming. Nearly everyone was able to open a Skimming gateway of length enough to allow their person through, though not everyone was as lucky in their attempts to arrive squarely at the Gardens. Indeed, over the next quarter of an hour, Soldiers (and even some wayward Dedicated) popped up in the most ridiculous of places. Aside from the Gardens, one popular region in which to appear seemed to be the men's and women's barracks, just a short walk east or west (dependent on which gender) of the Gardens. Not always was this the gender of the Skimmer in question, as discovered by one or two wide-smiling males. One unfortunate Soldier came back sopping wet, eyes wide, after her Skimming attempt had brought her right above the lake. The lake!

Apocris would be lying if he said that he didn't find that very, very funny.

Once the girl had been dried off, and once a brief headcount had been done to ensure that each initiate had returned to the lesson, they were free to resume. The Soldiers were comparing their achievements and lacks thereof with the first weave, though this was only the beginning. Traveling would prove to be tricky indeed for those without a Talent in it, or even for those who only possessed Traveling as a minor Talent. For those who would claim Traveling as a sufficient Talent, however, it would be a good deal easier than Skimming, even. That certainly was the case for Apocris himself.

“Good work,” Lara said, gracing the recruits with a brown gaze. “How you fare with the next weave will depend solely on your Talents. If the Wheel did not bequeath Traveling upon you, then no amount of work in the world will have you gating about like a professional by the end of the lesson. Just as Skimming had you memorize your destination, Traveling requires you to know your place of origin. As such, I would like the unfamiliar to take a moment to examine the Northern Yards.”

There was nothing particularly noteworthy about the Northern Yards: they were composed of a flat, unblemished stretch of land, and disappointment to anyone who expected more. The craters and deviations in level that one might expect from the Blasting Grounds were absent, as the Northern Yards were reserved for weaponry exercises and only the most docile of weaves. After the initiates took a moment to examine its reaches, Apocris and Lara began demonstrating the weaves for the recruits.

Spirit, pure and clean and white and undiluted, was woven as if from his fingertips. It was easier in comparison to Skimming, suffice to say, and much more rapid, too. In half a moment, twin gateways stretched open, permeating the fabric that meshed together reality. Silver-blue spray splashed through Apocris's gateway, the initiates realizing they were peering out unto the Sea of Storms. Having studied negotiations under the Atha'an Miere, Apocris was familiar indeed with that particular tract of water. Lara, on the other hand, had allowed her gateway to reveal flat, unploughed farmland, covered in a crystalline blanket of gleaming white snow. Her old home, mayhap? It appeared notably deserted, and for that, he pitied her.

“Now, I would like you initiates to take a hand at weaving together a gateway. Keep in mind the destination: the Gardens. It might help for you to face north in the direction of the Gardens to acclimatize yourself. If it turns out that you are not Talented in Traveling, your gateway will not open sufficiently. If you are Talented, however . . . well, the outcome should remain obvious,” Apocris instructed. “I would like you to practice entering the gateway, too, and having it close behind you before returning here. Just as opening a gateway where an object already exists will sever that object cleanly, closing a gateway over an object does the same thing.”

Lara grinned. “It'd be a pity to dismember yourself after discovering a new Talent. Well, anyway, off with you.”

OOC: Same deal as before, folks. Either your character will or will not be able to open a gateway, and if they can't, well, I'm sure they'll live with it. Just as with before, no killing / dismembering anyone with your gateway, now. 400 words as a minimum, and Part III will be up in a week! Go nuts!
