Death march

You are facing a problem that many of us face...

Do you know where your father was when started? Did he go part of the way by train? When and where was he picked up? Did he go north or south of Prague when heading west? Did he hear the Russian guns..Did he come home by plane or ship? All give clues to a possible route..

The only common feature of Stalag VIIIB and its arbeitkommandos were that the order to evacuate was given on January 22nd 1945 and implemented almost immediately..

In my fathers march started at Arbeitkommando E72 Beuthen Hohenzollern coalmine and headed south into Czechoslavkia over the grandfather mountain and then west. He was adament he went south of Prague, before being picked somewhere in Bavaria by the Americans in late April. He came home via Brussels and Ostend and was home for VE day. We are not confident we have an accurate story.

We know he met other marches on the way, but they were not necessarily taking the same route.

regards Roger Hawkins
