“Lyone Sei’Tar!”

Lyone turned from her walk to find the Head Gaidin approaching her, a hurried look on his face. In respect, she gave an awkward salute and then changed her mind halfway through that and proceeded into a mix of a bow and curtsey; Light burn these situations, she never knew how to react around the man to show him the respect that he may deserve as the Head Gaidin of the Training Grounds!

“Yes, Jield Gaidin?” At least her answer was smooth and polite, and she hoped she had added a right amount of respect into her voice – surely he wouldn’t want more, would he?

“Are you aware that there is to be a lesson on hand to hand combat today, taught by Enriana Gaidar?” His mind was clearly focusing on other tasks as well as this one, for his hands were wandering to rough up his hair without his realization. Jield Gaidin was not a person she envied, she would never like to have the authority of Head Gaidar set upon her, she wasn’t even sure she would handle the authority that came with the rank of Gaidar well! No, she decided, I definitely don’t want to hold any position of authority in the Training Grounds above Gaidar, that’s for sure!

“I am, sir,” did anyone call him ‘sir’? “Enriana Gaidar had enlisted me to help her setting up and to be her demonstration assistant. The lesson isn’t due to start until after lunch though, sir.” There was that ‘sir’ again.

“Yes, yes, that’s good, it’ll make it easier for you.”

“Easier for me to do what exactly, Jield Gaidin?”

“Enriana Gaidar had been,” he paused, “well let’s just say she’s been called away on important matters. Since she trusted you enough to assist her, I’m sure she will think that you would be a suitable replacement for her lesson. I’m not sure how many people will attend the lesson, it’s always hard to tell because the participation rate in the lesson seems to fluctuate haphazardly, but would you mind teaching it in place of her?”

“Not at all, sir; I’ve taught quite a few lessons in hand to hand combat, it could be another to add to the number.”

“Excellent! Thank you, Lyone; and I might add that I’ve been noticing your keen involvement in hand to hand combat and it impresses me that you seem to have found a keen interest so easily, you should be proud.”

“Thank you, sir.”

One more awkward half salute half bow and curtsey from Lyone and the Head Gaidin whisked himself away, off to attend to far more important matters, most likely. Since she was to be teaching the lesson instead of just assisting, Lyone decided not to return just yet to the barracks but to instead arrive at where the lesson would be taught in order to mentally prepare. Enriana had decided to have the lesson indoors, in one of the training halls, as a quiet escape from the many distractions outside on such a nice day.

Luckily for Lyone, Enriana Gaidar had prepared all physical preparations; there were soft safety mats layering the floor of the entire hall, reaching across to fit neatly into all the corners and against all the walls. Shifted across in neat piles in one corner was all the equipment that would be needed for the lesson, various pads and cushions as well as suitable shields that could be used for exercises in various parts of the lesson. Thinking quickly, Lyone placed the cushions around the room so that they made a giant circle that provided each cushion – they would act as seats – with enough personal space. Choosing the one at the head of the circle, Lyone sat down, closed her eyes and began the slow ritual of meditation. She breathed slowly in and out, exhaling fully and slowly so that she could take in deep rich breaths that reached all the way down to the bottom of her lungs.

For the next hours she worked through various meditation exercises in order to calm her mind and body in a way that she felt helped her to achieve her best when it came to hand to hand combat. When lunch was brought to a close by a bell, students began to clamber in, and upon seeing Lyone sitting on a cushion grew quiet. They sat down on the cushions forming the rest of the circle and looking around awkwardly.

“Welcome,” Lyone said, shocking some of them, “to the hand to hand combat lesson. I do not want your names just yet, but instead I want you to make yourself comfortable on your cushion, there are enough for everyone. Meditation is a vital part to hand to hand combat in order to properly relax your mind and body to be at your best. When you are comfortable, shut your eyes and take in twenty deep, slow breaths. In, and out, in, and out, in, and out and so on. When you’ve reached the count of twenty, the deep breathing will seem like second nature to you, so continue it and focus on your toes. Slowly tighten and relax them, and think about them become weightless. When you have a feeling of almost weightlessness, you’ll know when you get it, move up your legs and do the same thing. Slowly make your way up your body, tightening and relaxing each muscle until your entire body feels just like your toes. Your final muscle will be your mind, and when you make it weightless you will feel a swarming feeling that is oddly calming. When you achieve this, take twenty more breaths and open your eyes.”
