Riani Seruman, only remaining daughter of the High Seat of House Seruam and heir thereof, rose from the awkward bow she had made in imitation of the Aethan’Tar in front of her. The other Aethan’Tar; Riani was not quite used to the thought that she was indeed one herself yet, but the reality of it had dawned on her this past week she had been spent at the Training Grounds of the White Tower. Had she lifted her greenish brown eyes but a fraction she would’ve glimpsed the shining white spire that shot right up to the very heavens, but Riani had no thought – or energy, for that matter – to indulge in such activity.

“You are dismissed,” the tall, broadshouldered Andoran said in a brisk voice, and Riani, again in more or less perfect imitation of the girl who had so conveniently stood directly in front of her this whole lesson, turned on her heels. There was one thing to be said about the old hand-me-downs from her brother, dead nearly eight years; they gave plenty of room for free movement. The finely cut woollens were loose on her frame; her brother had been both considerably taller and heavier built than she, not to mention that he, unlike her, had had plenty of muscle when he had worn these last. The thought of her brother came with the feeling of her gut being in the clenched fist of a strong-arm, and Riani had to use most of her considerable willpower to avoid giving into the intense feeling of grief that threatened to knock her straight off her feet. With abrupt, quick movements the almost boyishly slim figure started jogging in the direction of the Archery Yard; the notice on the lesson board she had been told should be as close to the center of existence as made no difference had announced an archery lesson at two bells after midday, and since Riani knew full well that swords were heavy - her brother had let her hold his, once, and the then ten-yearold Riani had nearly buckled under from the sheer weight of it – she thought she might have a chance, at least, to do better with the bow and arrow.

Glancing at the man in front of her, Riani shifted nervously from foot to foot. She recognized the Head Gaidin; he had been pointed out for her a couple of times by a couple of older girls who seemed to enjoy showing a newbie around. His auburn hair was collected in a loose tail in the back, she noticed; her own dark brown had been collected in a considerably tighter one with a piece of blue ribbon that, by chance, matched her clothing perfectly. At the behest of their teacher she spoke out first, in a loud and self-assured voice. “I am Riani Seruman, Jield Gaidin, class; I have no more experience with a bow than that I have seen men wield one.”
