Part Two: Rules

As they began the exercise that Lyone had given them, the Sei’Tar moved around the room slowly, watching each student as they practiced the punches that Lyone had set them. It was quite amusing to watch someone fight against an imaginary opponent, and she only guessed that she had looked just as ridiculous and just as strange as the many students punching into thin air before her. As she went round from student to student she corrected techniques where they needed correcting and she answered questions whenever they had questions. There weren’t many questions though, the exercise was simple enough and most trainees got the hang of exactly what they were needed to do even if they didn’t quite get the hang of it and needed Lyone’s guiding hand to show them the proper way to do what had been asked of them.

The Sei’Tar remembered her own first hand to hand combat lesson, not at the Training Grounds as a Sei’Tar or Aethan’Tar, but a few years before that when her brother had begin to teach her how to defend herself. Like all older brothers he was very protective of his little sister and thought that it was very important for her to learn how to defend herself on the streets should any thugs give her trouble. However, Lyone had no doubt that after years of training under the Gaidin and Gaidar of the White Tower that she would be able to easily fend off her brother, who she had once considered a master of hand to hand combat, and possibly beat him in quite a few other weapons as well.

“Right everyone,” she called, coming back to her own cushion as she said it, drawing everyone’s eyes to her in the process, “I want you all to return to your places and be seated on your cushions. Unfortunately the next little part of this lesson isn’t as hands on, there are some things that you must learn along with the actual techniques used in hand to hand combat. This part is one of those things; it’s a discipline that many follow when they use hand to hand combat to fight, and it is one that I myself follow, so I feel that you should hear about it, even if you don’t think that it is relevant to you when you will be fighting.

“You hopefully all remember the rule of hard on soft and soft on hard, this is a rule of morals. I’ve taught you how to do some basic attacks, and I’ve shown you some ideas of killing strikes, but you must learn that sometimes it is better to walk away than fight; to conserve your strength and keep your abilities hidden from an opponent. This next rule helps you to do so, and it’s a bit lengthy I’m afraid; leave before touch, touch before hurt, hurt before harm, harm before maim, maim before kill, kill before being killed. It may make not a lot of sense, but I will explain it a bit to you a little bit more. You may think that running is a cowardly approach, but despite the stigmas associated with walking away it is often the best tactic to use instead of fighting. Or, you may be shocked about me mentioning killing; you can kill someone with your bare hands without a weapon, and as a Gaidin or Gaidar you will probably kill someone sometime. Now, who wants to help me demonstrate?”

She picked a trainee and he stood up in front of her.

“Now, punch me,” she said, and he looked at her, obviously shocked. “Just do it, I want to demonstrate something to the entire class.”

Although clearly still worried, the boy nodded, and let fly a reasonable punch towards her chest. Garnet sidestepped it easily, and backed off. “Leave,” she told the class. “If you can, don’t get into a fight. Just walk away – keep your eyes on your attacker, but leave.” Stepping back up to the boy, she grinned. “Try again.” He punched another time, but this time Lyone had her arm in the way, sweeping the blow aside. “Touch,” she said. “If you can’t leave, you must touch them, but only to defend yourself. Again,” to the trainee, who was getting the hang of it now. He punched, she blocked and used the same hand to bounce off the boy’s elbow and slap his head.

While he rubbed his head to stop the throbbing, Lyone addressed the class again. “Hurt. It’s small, it lasts only seconds, but it’s a warning. Again.” The boy, looking more wary, punched towards her. This time the block became a block and punch, stopping just short of the trainee’s chest. “Harm. I would have hit him, and it would leave a bruise. It would hurt for a reasonable while. A second warning. Again,” she instructed the boy, and he obliged. Lyone grabbed his arm mid-block and twisted, pulling him off-balance towards her and pushing his arm upwards. He yelped in surprise, staring into her eyes. “Maim,” she said. “If I had kept going, your arm would now be broken. A permanent injury, and it cannot be undone. If you get this far, you must be prepared to defend your life. Again.” He punched, and Lyone reverted to her simple block-and-punch. The punch, though, was an open-handed strike aimed squarely at his nose. It stopped close to the boy’s face, and he froze. “Kill,” the Sei’Tar said softly. “At which point, your attacker dies, and you may find yourself in a great deal of trouble. But it is still better than the final option, which is being killed. Any questions?”

OOC: This little spiel is one actually taught in martial art disciplines, if you were wondering. This part is a little bit boring, so how about we just say 400 words about your character reacting to this, their thoughts et cetera as well as any questions they might have. =) Oh, and the lesson is still open to newcomers.
