Part Three: Games

Jield began to walk up and down the archery yard yet again, slowly pacing back and forth as he watched each trainee fire arrows at the target as they had the day before. It was now a new day, and just as he had told the trainees to do they had met him here straight after breakfast and were now again practicing their shooting at the target again. Some of them were beginning to progress – there had been the occasional bull’s eye, but nothing more – but most were taking their time, as he had expected.

“Ceasefire!” he shouted, and waited until they had all stopped, “Good. Go and collect your arrows, and then come back and circle around me, we’re ready to move on.”

The trainees began to do so, and soon they were quickly back around him, waiting for the next part of the lesson.

“Right, good job everyone. For the next and final part of this lesson, I will be testing just how much potential you’ve got, as well as give you a little break from the routine so far. Right, I want all of you to follow me across here to the Rough, please. Bring your bows, and your quivers, but you won’t be needing the latter.” He began to lead them across and found that a new set of quivers were set out waiting for the lesson. Jield had requested the favour of an Aes Sedai earlier this morning, and after she had obliged he had set out these quivers here waiting for them.

“For those of you that don’t know, which I’m sure is hardly any of you, this is the Rough – it’s Ogier built. So far, you have been using the bow at the Range, with only a still-standing target in front of you. However, it will never be as easy as that anywhere else. Can you nail down a moving target? Would you manage to hit a target as war goes on around you? Today, therefore, we will test your skill to use the bow under pressure, and for that I’ve arranged a little game for you.

“The point of the game is simple, and can be said in one word, survival. When I’m done, you’ll be given a chance to enter into the Rough and find an ideal and isolated part of your own where you can begin to try and survive by trying to ‘kill’ everyone else using only the bow and the arrows I hand out to you. Your classmates will be your enemies and you’ll have to be the last one standing to be the overall winner.

“You can use any tactics you want to ‘kill’ your opponents, but a kill only count if you hit your enemy.” He bent down and picked up an arrow from one of the quiver standing on the ground next to him. “These are the arrows we’ll be using today. They have been altered by an Aes Sedai to collapse on impact, and do no harm. They are all equipped with a small amount of paint on the tip, so you will know when you’ve hit your target.

“Final thing to remember, if you’re shot at anytime and you’re hit, you’re dead and out of the game, plain and simple as that. If that happens, you will drop your bow and quiver or arrows and make your way out of the Rough immediately, returning here. The others will then be free to use your quiver of arrows so that they don’t run out. When all but one of you have returned here, I will call the game to the end, and the student left alive is the winner. The winner will recieve a day of rest and relaxation free from everything. That means, no lessons, no duties for an entire day, only all the free time a day can bring!”

“If you now get yourself ready, we can begin. I want all of you to enter into the Rough, and you’ll have five minutes to find a niche of your own – you may want to stay in it, or venture out. When I ring this bell, you can start, and when I ring it again it means anyone still inside come out. Of course, if no winner has been chosen by, let’s say, noon, the game will be over.”

OOC: Games are fun! Let’s say another 600 words for this part; and please do not godmode. I don’t know how many of you have ever tried archery, but at first it is difficult and I really don’t expect your character to get the hang of it so quickly. Realistic is always good. Given that, none of you write yourself becoming the winner, I’ll pick one OOC when I’ve read your posts ;-) Unfortunately, the lesson is closed and credits will be given out on the 14th. Only Marit has an extension so far ;-)
